Hooboy! So easy to put your exercise time at the bottom of your list of things to do in a day...and dang if that isn't putting yourself at the bottom of your list...we are entering the crazy busy time of year where all the priorities want to be well...priorities! Found myself flat out of time yesterday, and today's not looking good either. Gotta figure it out!

Thanks Kona, had hoped to have reached it a few weeks ago but currently injured and trying to get back into it - baby steps!! can't believe I've reached 10M overall too!! Hoping to be 90% fit for Holiday challenge!!

ImageImageImage Image

Whoop, whoop and way to get to ANOTHER milestone! Congratulations, Warnie, on achieving TEN million lifetime meters! We wish you many, MANY more!

Not sure how the million meter prize calculations work when you are a three erg type contributor! I think you have to reach the milestone in a single erg division to get, for instance, the sweatshirt that's awarded here in the US for 10 MM. And then there's the not every country gives the same awards issue. It's complicated, but worthy!
Yes it is per machine. I'll hit 10 million on the bike before i get to 5 Million on the rower!! (Although I am trying to increase the rower!!) - not done much with the skierg so far!!!

Image The time is near....it's TRADITION

You can bet that most of us have dreams of receiving our Holiday Challenge pins in January...and we will do our best to earn those small, but ever so meaningful, trophies of our commitment to an exercise goal that requires planning, and sometimes getting on the erg when it is not what we want to do. But we will do it. And we will congratulate ourselves, because no matter what....very few of our co-workers or even family members truly understand what it means to get 200,000 m done in 26 or less days. No excuses and no procrastinating. Just.get.it.done. Never fear - we'll brag on it here!

I have been having some trouble with what I thought was my PM3 but was in fact the cord that goes to the monitor. It stopped me dead in my tracks during the Fall Team challenge. I was able to replace it myself and am back to rowing. Now that it's cold outside and the beach is no longer an option I figured I'd set a goal for myself. So I'm planning on rowing a half-marathon on New Years Day. I looked and looked for an 8 week rowing plan and couldn't find any that suited me, so I took a half-marathon training plan for running and converted it for rowing. I'll see how this works out and if it turns out to be a good plan (meaning one that I don't die trying to do) I might post it someplace for others looking for something similar.
I'm hoping that by sharing my goal with my fellow Luna-Tics it will make me accountable and less apt to set this goal aside when it starts getting tough. And if I accomplish this goal I should have a reindeer in the Holiday Challenge at the very least.
Good luck!

That's what happens every year once we switch the clocks. Sunset on Friday is too early for me to row much before the Sabbath starts. (Most of the time I'm lucky to get 15 minutes, but I did get 30 last week.)

Image Another episode...bunny trails of the mind

Tis the season of traffic jams and long lines, and a lot of people with much less patience - and sometimes "those" people are us. Practice extra patience.

It's been awhile since I've shared a bunny trail of the mind (the last one, sort of, was about bicycle helmets). Today's topic, should you choose to read it, is ants and traffic control.Image
Whaaat?

Some time ago, I read a book called Traffic: Why We Drive The Way We Do (and What It Says About Us) by Vanderbilt. As part of giving input to traffic planners and engineers on designs that are safer for pedestrians, cyclists AND motorists, I read a lot of perhaps less mainstream things. One of the bits in Vanderbilt's book was about ants and traffic control. Turns out that ants and humans are two of the few species that actually travel in a path bidirectionally where collisions could occur. Ants just do this better than humans. The Traffic book was published in 2008. This year, another group of researchers used some Argentine ants for a study on traffic patterns where more and more ants were introduced into a scenario that had changing bridge widths between the nest and the food source. Bear with me. You don't read this stuff every day. From "Experimental Investigation of Ant Traffic Under Crowded Conditions": Studying ant traffic management has been a source of inspiration for scientists working with large groups of interacting particles in many fields. This includes molecular biology, statistical physics, and telecommunications. It may also have relevance for managing human traffic, particularly as scientists develop autonomous vehicles that might be programmed to work together cooperatively as ants do.

For pedestrians and car traffic (hmmm...bicycles weren't mentioned!), flow of movement begins to decline when occupancy levels reach 40 percent of capacity. For ants, traffic doesn't slow until occupancy reaches at least 80 percent. The research group notes that traffic jams are ubiquitous in human society because we're all pursuing our personal objectives. Ants, on the other hand, share a common goal for survival of the colony. They self-regulate their speeds. If the ant trail gets clogged, some ants take an ant leader role and force the situation of "your lot has to go around on a different route".

Now I'm not advocating that we take up ant behavior totally - we humans are not known for always behaving in ways that benefit the collective "colony" or even mother earth. But collectively, the Concept2 universe will indeed be collaborating on a common goal of erging enough meters to make a difference via five charities if we hit the Concept2 goal (naturally this will occur...but I am predicting it will occur on day 24 of the Challenge). I am advocating for practicing extra patience during the holiday season. In fact, I might have to put a reminder sign on my dashboard....be the ant...at least for the Challenge!
