This is a quick (perhaps dumb) question:

When setting the damper on a Model D I have a very hard time seeing the settings (numbers). The embossed numbers are such a light color (just etched into the flywheel). Now, my D is in my basement which is relatively dark, but I'm wondering if perhaps there is supposed to be a sticker or something on the erg with the numbers? Could it just have been inadvertently left off my erg?

Just curious. Do others have the same problem? I don't change the damper setting often, so it's not that big of a deal.

Jeff

You could get some bright tape, and put it on the erg at intervals so you can more easily see the markings.

I'll agree the damper scale is much easier to see on a model C.

I don't need the numbers, I know where to position the lever to get the drag factor I want (I'll do that as I approach the machine from the flywheel end). Drag factor is more important than damper setting.

The PM3 displays the drag factor as a menu option (needs a few strokes to spin the flywheel up to speed).

I was actually going to ask this, but since this thread is here...I noticed on my Technique & Use DVD featuring the Oarsome Foursome, that the damper settings on the Model D's they were using had blue numbers, and was wondering if this was something they added themselves, or something that Model D's sold in Australia already have?

I can't see the numbers as well.
You may just write them with a marker...

That's what I did, used a "Sharpie" marker. Worked great despite my atrocious penmanship.

Will

QUOTE(ancho @ Feb 25 2006, 02:19 AM)

I can't see the numbers as well.
You may just write them with a marker...

When we came out with the D, we decided we wanted to downplay the 1-10 scale because too often it was perceived by novice rowers that 10 was in some way "better" (of course we Americans know that more is always better). Our hope was that people would be more inclined to use the drag factor in the PM3 to set the damper, and I think this has often been the case. The texturing for the numbers was selected and burned into the mold before the final color determination was made, and it turns out the light blue tends to downplay the numbers a bit more than we'd intended. Combine all that with the stickers used in the DVD and we've had a number of requests for some improvement.
So the various solutions, short and long range:
* The mold texturing is being revised.
* Using a colored pencil or non-permanent marker and rubbing over the numbers much as one would to take a gravestone rubbing works well to bring the numbers out.
* We have a simple 1-10 scale sticker available on request.
JonW
