Being interrupted during a time-trial piece

Post by Tom Barrick » August 10th, 2006, 5:12 am

Ok, this one is a bit humorous, but bear with, there is a point.

Just yesterday I sat down after some light UT1 work to do a 30-minute trial. My July CTC was awful and I wanted to right the ship. I hadn't rowed a whole lot for a few days to gain some of my energy back, and this seemed a good time. Daughter to bed, wife watching a chick flick, and the bedroom was free for some good heavy rowing. Hell, I only needed a half hour!

I get going well, right off the mark, keeping it down low (1:46 splits) for the first 10 minutes not feeling at all tired. Another 5 minutes and I'm getting the idea that more mental energy is needed. I do that, or try at least. It works. Halfway done. 14 minutes left, concentrating deeply and, ... ABRUPTLY, and I mean that, the bedroom door swings wide open and hits the wall with a boom!
When you row a hard piece there's that feeling that you are one with the environment around you. You can even note the slightest change in temperature, or if someone sneezes downstairs(or upstairs, depending.) The second the door was opened I could feel the wind being sucked out of the room, just as a different air was being driven in. Sister-in-law.

"Everything ok in here?! Oh! Sorry!" There I was, half naked, riding a piece of steel on a rubberized seat, dripping with sweat. She slammed it shut, after a good 5 seconds. I knew it was 5 seconds because I turned, in a good stunned fashion, to look at the PM2 after she had left.

The SIL had come over, unbeknownst to me, to watch the second half of the chick flick with the wife. She later admitted to curiosity, and, thinking there was an air-conditioning problem in the bedroom as she passed to use the bathroom, proceeded to check it out. As if the first thing anyone says aloud, to a room with an A/C problem, is "Everything ok in here?!"

Now, before I go all out on a long distance row I tell everyone in the house what I'm doing. But stragglers beware, if you interrupt me, I will throw something at you!

The piece ended up being ruined completely.

 Today I was devising an "unclip handle" that would come off in an instant, and could be thrown at people or pets with ease! Perhaps C2 could help me with this. It's either that or Chinese stars. Two of them, to be precise. One Chinese star to hurl at the intruder, and the second to shut the door behind their falling form.

Anyone have a similar story? Anyone? B)

Being interrupted

Post by nkoffler » August 10th, 2006, 11:18 am

Definitely has happened to me especially when the erg was in the living room. We now have a basement exercise room which makes interruptions less of a problem. Still, it's startling when the door opens even after a knock.

My best interruption story was when our youngest (maybe 6 at the time) came in as I was doing sprints of some sort and started talking to if I were just lounging on the couch. Between strokes, I was able to pant out, "Can't.......talk.......now!"

Not to pry but if the SIL is over watching the chick flick, she likely visits frequently. As such, she should know all about your erging and you shouldn't be shy about her seeing you "half naked."

Looking in bedroom... hmm... sounds like SiL is curious.

I have a 3 year-old who has learned the hard way not to step into the room at the wrong time. The only way to get her out, quickly, is to bring the split down under 1:40, as the sound frightens her. Of course, that's easier said than done when you're already tired as all hell from the other several minutes you've been at 90%.

As for the SIL, generally, I don't care, but when it comes to rowing I'm very private. Also, I'm not the type to walk around the house with only half my clothes on while she's over.

It's what I imagine it'd be like if I had had a sister growing up. Exactly that, except I would have thrown a shoe horn at her or something.

i used to have my erg in our basement... I moved it up to the deck because the basement in connected to the garage... and people always walked in and out of the room... drove me bonkers. I don't even like to have people watch me erg... lol so distracting. I make sure to erg when people are not home.

With my erg being in the basement, I'm usually rowing by myself, but occasionally my wife or 4 year old daughter will be in the room with me. My wife usually knows when I'm "going after it" on the rower, but I've needed to squeeze out the "Can't.......talk.......now!" on occasion when my daughter tries to talk to me.

It's certainly nice to be in a zone when I'm time trialing. It's best to be home alone, so that I can crank the music as loud as I want it, and not freak anyone else out by how severe my breathing can sound at the end of a particularly hard effort.

I'm taking a trip to Illinois (sea level) in September, and as I live at altitude in Colorado, I'm looking forward to doing some time trialing when I get there. The only "problem" will be using the ergs in clubs/gyms for the first time in years. It probably won't be an issue, as I primarily compete as a runner, and my races typically involve other people being around :) , but it WILL be different than being down in "the cave" (as my wife and I call the basement workout area).

It's the unexpected interruptions that get me. I row in our garage, with the door open so that I can face out, squint my eyes and occasionally pretend I'm on the water. This, of course, means that my back is to the door to the house, which my husband will open occasionally to make sure I'm still doing OK. A very sweet gesture- but on occasion hearing the noise behind me when I'm zoned out scares the dickens out of me  Most of the time, though, I just hang in there even when family wanders through- it's a good way to learn how to focus with other folks around.

Something like this happened to me today. We had 10k's at my school today and halfway through, one of my teammates put on the hollaback girl song, and one of them started dancing to it. He was 6'2, around 210lbs, so it was funny to watch. It was also funny to watch my split go up to 2:05. Oohh well, not exactly the same as some of you guys, but still an interruption.
