johnnybike wrote:Francois, interesting formula. Of course if you follow that logic then the sub 18:30 sub 7 formula comes into play so Dougie proves that as he has gone Sub 7 already. So 18:30 5k is nailed on Dougie

Nice 60' Francois. That is a tremendous effort relative to say your 2K time and in relation to my sub 15600 60' best.

Tom, 2 nice records in one effort. well done. Sub 90 is the big target I assume.
Thanks Johnny! I am not a sprinter as you can tell!

The rule 10K ~ 5K x 2 + 1:00 comes from the race-time predictor chart of the book "The Competitive Runner's Handbook" by Bob Glover and Pete Schuder. The times for longer events do not translate well for erging IMO. For instance, based on your 60' row, you would do 10 miles (16,093m) in 60:01:59, which according to the table would predicts a 10K in 37:11.4 :!: :o

If I use the tables in "Daniels' Running Formula" by Jack Daniels, then, based on your 10K, your 5K should be at 18:13.2, your HM in 1:23:38 and your 60' row would be about 15,495m. Using curve fitting between the times for the 1500m, the mile and the 3000m, your 2K would be at 6:49.5. Clearly, there is more variation in speed in running that in erging. Even for distances of 5k and 10k the relationship (in Daniels' book) of 10k ~ 5K * 2.0741, which translates to adding 1:20 to 5K x 2 for a 5K in 18:00 is pessimistic in my view. Note that Paul's law of "double the distance add 5 to the pace" is even more pessimistic since it implies that 10K ~ 5K x 2 + 1:40. It might be valid for fatties at short distances, but not for us, LW with endurance to boot!

Cheers!

Now that is the sort of stat I like. Agree on the 5K, have beaten the 60' and HM so the 6:49 is a shoe-in.

I am sticking with the theory that if I can sub 18:30 for 5K then a sub 7 is on. It seems logical and more relative than forecasting 2K time from a HM effort. Although I have some wild rowing dreams I don't see 6:49 in amongst them because I just do not think I am capable. I suppose it could be argued that my training wil never help in that respect as I do not do any short pieces or fast pieces and never do intervals.

So to commit once again in public. My rowing dreams are any FM, FM sub 2:50. FM sub 2:46.59 (my best run FM) and Sub 7 in that order.

My weekend 10k...

Well I've been rowing a 5k each morning during the week at what I would term a moderate to easy pace (24:00 - 26:00) and then putting in a hard 5k on the weekends...or like the last two weekends, a hard 10k.

So to cut to the chase, this morning I posted a new 10k PB: 44:48.9 (last week's was 46:22.7). Mental note: dropping 1:30 from a 10k is *a lot* of effort!

Cheers,

Sean

Enjoy it while it lasts.

Sometime in the future you will be happy to drop 0:01.30 from a 10k.

After a few days of "height training" in the Pyrynees, yesterday I made a preparatory HM for the Marathon challenge (scheduled with Polaco for next tuesday):
PB with 1:22:31,3, about 25 sec off my previous PB.
Row started at 22:30, makes me reconciliate with my "new" erg :D

I gave a shot at the marathon challenge today. I'm completely spent now but I think it was worth it. I knocked over 6 minutes off of my time (2:52:26.1) and am currently in 3rd place for my age / weight :) ! John.

Last spring 2k PB: 7:43
Last month 2k PB: 7:40
Yesterday's 2k PB: 7:39

Not seeing a lot of other girl's times on here, either way I'm happy to have shaved off 4 seconds from last year.

Nice one YJ, presidentv8 and hwt_sculler

That is a tempting little target John. 2:02.5. I am going to have a little dabble at a long row on Sat. Not necessarily a FM, just a bit of a sampler

johnnyb--

No "dabbling" man. As I've said before, you're a lock for sub-7. Perhaps you want to give the 2k a try in the next 10 days and improve that Nonathlon score.

Ah, but Johnny is such a good distance man! Break my time Johnny and make my day, you can do it!!! Wait on the 2k till you're mentally ready for that distance. You've been putting in the k's both running and erging. At this time (you'd be fast too at the 2k with a bit of interval work) I'd say go long! (but beware the last 6k, it's hell  )

Not that big of an accomplishment but rowed my first 60 minute piece today. Decided on last 2K pace +15 for the pace and felt well within myself the entire time and plenty in the tank at the end. I averaged 2:06.7 for the entire piece with average HR of 138.

Question: If I want to try an all out effor, what is a good rule of thumb for pacing 2K+?? My average HR on all out 5K pieces is about 163 so I think I had plenty of Reserve left. Is 2K+10 reasonable for a race effort or should I try even faster? My all out 5K pace is 1:56.4 if that helps.

Thanks,

Rich

Nice 60' effort and a low HR.

Why not try holding just inside 2:00 to go over 15000 metres, which is the normal way of measuring it. break it into 5k 20 mins 3 times. Took me a couple of efforts before I could manage it.

Certainly looks as if you have some spare bpm capacity. I think I average 146 for a HM.

good luck

On the way to break 7500m in 30min I made another progress. 7378m last Monday. I'm getting closer and closer. Still a lot to do to reach the best in my category of 8000m.....

Plus today 14250m in 1h...45m more than previous PB!

What should be my 2k time based on times below?
500m 1:38.0, 1000m ? , 2000m 7:37.3, 10000m 40:46.8
