My first cold water swimming
Hi everyone,
Just wanted to share that today i gonna do my first cold-water swimming! I drive everyday near the sea, and always frustrated to not to enjoy it after a stressful work in office.
So, i decided to make the first step!
Anyone practicing around?
Cheers from Marseille (FRA),
Gilles

Gilles,
Hello from Portland, ME, USA. I'm not anywhere near you but I swim in the ocean 4 days/week. It is a great activity, enjoy and stay safe. Make sure to watch for the cold water shock when you first get in and you will find that your core body temperature continues to drop after you get out. Bring some warm tea, get dried off and warm up. Have a great time with the swimming!

How cold does it have to be to be ‘cold water’ swimming? I am picturing pushing ice blocks out of the way.
As a kid who grew up on the coast in England we swam in the sea from Easter till October with no wetsuits. Sea temperature would be about 10 C at coldest - that would be a save face dash in and out, but 12 C would be 10-15 mins in at a time.
This is now called ‘wild swimming’ as though it’s a special thing.

Re: My first cold water swimming
Swam in 18' water on Saturday. I very was tired before I started. Only went about 300m. Got back to shore. Felt frustrated, irritable and clumsy. Got home half an hour later, took my temperature which was 34.8'. Monitoring it over the next few hours I figured it had been about 34.2 when I got out of the lake. There had been no shivering, in or out of the water, just a feeling of furstration and lack of clear focus while swimming, and poor balance when I got out. I wonder how uncommon this is. Do others here get the shivering when going into hypothermia or just the other symptoms? I'd put it down to tiredness (and age!) until I got home and took my temp.

Took a dip from the Forty Foot on Dublin Bay in March 1968. Fully clothed, blue jeans, cable knit sweater. Prolly took off my penny loafers. Can’t tell in foto taken by future bride. Very cold on the bus after. I didn’t catch a chill cause she had a thing for drowned rats. Do I get a prize?

Moxy, I swim in the ocean off Portland, ME, 4 days/week. I find that even the days I don't feel great before I get in the water I always feel better getting out. I do find that some days i'm staggering around when I get out if it's been particularly cold. I usually shiver a bit when I'm in the car warming up, due to after drop. This lasts 10 minutes or so but very dependent on how long I was in the water and how cold it was.Moxy wrote: ↑October 28th, 2022, 10:33 amSwam in 18' water on Saturday.
