C2 app and TTHR

Post by solomon » October 27th, 2022, 10:23 pm

Good evening.
I'm trying to take another approach at using the rower. I'll start off by giving you some information.

58 yo male, 224#. 2 lad stents with no issues. I figure i would nail down my MHR. Last time I did that I just went with 220- age and that was it. But since I haven't figured it in a while I read up and the calculations are slightly different but not way off from the "old" way.

So I have this number and I plug it into the profile section of the C2 erg app. I save everything and back out. My question is if I continue with the calculations to figure my TTHR /50 -75% for aerobic how come the ranges are not even close? According to the app I would have to be at 90-100% to be in range.
Here are my calculations :
MHR = 166.07
RHR = 50 bpm
HRR =116.07
AEROBIC Percentages
116.07 x 50% = 58.035 + 50 = 108.035
116.07 x 75% = 87.05 + 50 = 137.05

When I plug a workout in and select " Target HR " I get 5 ranges. I can pick which one to use, that's no problem. The problem is the ranges seem to low.

Zone 1. 50 - 60% 64 - 77 bpm
Zone 2. 60 - 70% 77 - 90
Zone 3. 70 - 80% 90 - 103
Zone 4. 80 - 90% 103 - 116
Zone 5. 90 - 100% 116 - 129

Any thoughts? If you read this far thank you so much. I might be doing this all wrong so that's why I'm asking.
I appreciate your time
Regards
Chris

Suggest you check your profile for errors. It can be accessed through Logbook too.

When rowing at rating 20, what HR do you see after 5 minutes warm-up?

Thanks so much

Hi Solomon,
And welcome to the forum.
Rating 20 means at 20 strokes per minute (SPM).
Be good to add in your pace and the drag factor you row it at as well.

Basic learning and training for the sport of rowing and erging are done at low ratings, or rates, or spm, 18-23, so that we can develop our stroke, without getting exhausted immediately.

I've also noticed that there's an issue with the zone calculations - I recently increased my MHR - based on seen value vs calculated (increase from 182 -189) but the app has not recognised the new value inputs so the ranges it displays are still out.

It seems like even if you update the value for MHR, it caches any previous value.

I was going to give removing the MHR value a go - do a session - see if the numbers default to age based value ranges, then re-add the max HR and see if that forces it to accept the new value.

MHR = 166.07
That's a problem. Doubt you measured anything ending in .07 as your max. If this is a projected max HR then there is so much error in the number that all your zone are garbage. Please either measure max HR or skip HR zones and use a different metric to get your training zones. It's not that hard to measure max HR.

(p.s. if Max HR from Age was good enough, then everyone could set their exercise zones directly from age without needing max HR. Estimated Max HR from age doesn't work.)

Hey thanks for that. Only issue other than my calculations being garbage is that there is no number with a decimal entered anywhere in the app. The MHR value that I have entered is 165. So there is that .Furthermore I used the formula that was suggested here
https://www.concept2.com/indoor-rowers/ ... rate-range
Anyway thank you to all that have lent their input. I will follow up with the rate, drag ect later.

you get it... I tried removing MHR from the settings and it won't let you.

ok here goes....

1,150 Meters
5:00.0 Time
2:10.4 Pace
68 Calories
100 Heart Rate
Average Watts 158
Calories Per Hour 842
Stroke Rate 19
Stroke Count 98
Drag Factor 92
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From the app:
Zone 1. 50 - 60% 64 - 77 bpm
Zone 2. 60 - 70% 77 - 90
Zone 3. 70 - 80% 90 - 103
Zone 4. 80 - 90% 103 - 116
Zone 5. 90 - 100% 116 - 129
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

As far as the target zones are concerned in the app, it doesn't matter if i change my age, or my MHR they seem to be stuck at the values I posted above. Going off my calculations its easy enough to figure where I need to be, its just I like things to work out.... first world problems I guess.
I might delete the app and reinstall if that doesn't work out no big deal ill just continue the way I am and be happy with it.
Thanks to all that chimed in I appreciate it.

Those numbers with HR 100 show you are rowing well and are fit:

Distance per stroke: 1150/98 = 11.7m
Work per stroke: 158/19 = 8.3 Watt minutes.

[Estimated Max HR from age doesn't work
My only caveat to this is that it does work sometimes, but more akin to a broken watch being right twice a day.

My max isn't too dissimilar to the 220 - age but it's a coincidence

Well gents I fixed the issue. I uninstalled the app and reinstalled it and the target HR zones are correct.

Thanks again to all I greatly appreciate it

I just cleared data - rather than full re-install (tho it does something similar) and it's finally adjusted my zones on historic rows in my logbook.
