The notional rule governing pace and workload suggests that pace should slow in company with prolongation of effort. Less apparent is that 3x888m on 1.3’ rest is a test of power maintenance greater than that provided by 4x1k/5’R because more nearly approximating the condition of continuous effort. I loved the 5’ ‘quality assurance’ R&R in Wolverine and Pete Plans. But more than one serious erglete here has argued that 4x1k on 1:30 was just about right for providing a genuine, all-in endurance interval gasper. I’m certain they must have been correct.Elizabeth wrote: ↑August 11th, 2022, 8:30 pmOh believe me, the short rests weren't perfect, but the pacing felt about right. If it weren't for the short rest breaks, I would generally expect 3x888 to be a little speedier than 4x1000.jackarabit wrote: ↑August 10th, 2022, 2:41 pm
At my age, I get cold sweats thinking about the expression ‘perfect with the short rest.’. Always on deck for carbs! Don't tell my A1C.

Wow, I’m the first poster under the refreshed subforum (topic?) head ‘Forum Flyersverse.’ That header is sort of open source, innit? But it’s infrequently modded. Whodunnit? Should we engage in Forum Flyersversification? . It did default to the default over my maunderings. All’s well.

Forum Flyers Boat #1 is in fourth position! We are blessed with several fantastic athletes on our team! The fastest of which fortunately come in the shape/size of 3 HWT, 1 LWT and 1 incredible Female
I just posted my time in this month's challenge. Overestimated my fitness and started out too fast in the first 888 and could not adequately recover in the 80 seconds of rest..,and got slower and suffered more in the last two segments. In hindsight I now regret voting for the "Crazy Eights", and should have voted for something more like "Crazy Fives"
I notice Jack mentioning this, but anyone else struggling with new the ErgData app? I can get the initial workout to appear on the app...but about half the time it does not record any meters when I row...and I have to log my workout manually. When setting up the workout...is it best to set it up on the PM5 monitor or the ErgData app or doesn't it matter?

PS to Yankeerunner: Yes, Emerson College in Boston. Josh and Leah are not military vets (thank you for your service!!!). Once they get settled in Boston, they might give rowing on the water a try. I tried it the first time this past Spring with the Asheville Rowing Club. I had gone to 3 lessons when my wife had her accident so I had to stop before I really got going. But very different than the Erg. Great workout but also oddly meditational. I might give it a try again, but so easy to just jump on the Erg.

Selecting from standard list or laborious keyed () entry in the PM5 reliably syncs workout to log when menu key is pressed after finish (old school). I am sticking with old school cause I’m tired of living on the perpetual learning curve. YMMV

FF boat #4 is afloat in Aug CTC. Kiwi Shirley Godkin, WIRC hammer winner and long time FF member, has an errant entry in boat 4. If you are reading this and have her email or other away of contacting her, please ask her to revise her entry. I have PMd Chris Whale but no response.

Hello Everyone,
I'm Pete, I'm new to the team and looking forward to figuring out if being part of a erg team will add something new to my training (with a healthy dose of learning from you all).
My training is fairly unstructured - it's normally based upon whatever time I have left after I've done some bedtime reading with my 7yo son. So I've tended to focus on heart rate zones more than any specific erg pieces. A typical week will include one long (1hr+) piece, a couple of harder interval pieces, and some more easy recovery rows. But I mostly find that my training is hugely beneficial to managing both physical and mental health - I always feel that my time on the erg clears my mind of anything else happening and makes me a happier husband, dad, and work colleague.
Looking forward to starting my Team contribution in the Fall Team Challenge next month. Best wishes to you all.

Welcome aboard Pete. Recognizing the necessity and benefit of active recovery is essential to meter munchers, many of whom feel compelled to row 6 or 7 days a week during challenges. Good on you.

Re: Forum Flyers
Hi all - long time no talk - approaching 2 years I am afraid. Some may actually remember me from when I could actually do this erg stuff successfully.
I was compelled to back off when my life became consumed during the pandemic by my work (I am a veterinarian) which meant little training time and an acceleration of the OA in my knees from all the standing. My CTCs have documented this fall form grace to disgrace sadly but fortunately I have been able to complete my 130th consecutive CTC entry today. My 2k has fallen from 7:05 to maybe 8:20+ in the same time frame.
I felt bound to check in to explain why I am so slow to those oldies who may wonder. The August CTC was completed literally on one leg as I recover from a foot surgery and prepare for the first of two knee replacements in October. My racing days are over!
It is really great to see the Flyers continue to have a significant presence in the challenges after all these years and to see all the new faces that are appearing.
Rock on and best wishes

Lindsay good to see from you! Jettisoning the guns and a part of the cargo is what keeps the ship afloat. There is no disgrace in changing course to fight the ship as it sinks, which it invariably does.

@Jackarabit - thank you for the warm welcome.
Well...the WOD today was right up my street for a bit of a status check on where I'm at. 6x1000m / 2min rest. Here's the result.
Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M HR
23:19.0 6,000m 1:56.5 221 1060 22 157
3:52.1 1,000m 1:56.0 224 1070 22 143
r: 2:00 381m
3:53.6 1,000m 1:56.8 220 1055 22 151
r: 2:00 330m
3:52.4 1,000m 1:56.2 223 1067 22 159
r: 2:00 334m
3:52.0 1,000m 1:56.0 224 1071 22 161
r: 2:00 304m
3:54.0 1,000m 1:57.0 219 1052 22 164
r: 2:00 320m
3:55.0 1,000m 1:57.5 216 1042 22 166
I reckoned I could hold 1:56 pace but just dropped off a bit at the end. 166HR is up above 90% of theoretical maximum for my age so I didn't have much to give in the end. Anyway, feeling pretty happy with that as a fair reflection of my level at the moment.

Yes, that is a piece of work and then some. Positive splitting sez all in not planned and you pushed to get near your real HRMax. Active rest meters also tells the story. Very spicey.CasperBrooks wrote: ↑August 28th, 2022, 4:49 pm@Jackarabit - thank you for the warm welcome.

Great to hear from you, Lindsay! I was initially worried when you stopped posting regularly, but saw your CTC, etc. contributions coming in still, so figured it was just a time crunch and not a loss of interest in rowing. As a very infrequent forum visitor myself, I can't criticise .lindsayh wrote: ↑August 28th, 2022, 6:43 amHi all - long time no talk - approaching 2 years I am afraid. All the best with the recovery. I've been enjoying getting closer to your CTC times, but that's clearly not through any of my own gains!
