Set a personal best of 6:58.4, dropping 4.5 seconds off my previous time.
It was hard. It didn't feel good. I wanted to give up twice during the session.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
TdS round 3 (2k).
Had been pretty nervous about this. Had a 30' paddle on the rower at UT1 in the morning, and every time I started thinking about pacing this piece, my HR jumped by about 10bpm.
Target - tried the classic rowing 2k strategy:
0-800 1:53
801-1400 1:52
1401-1800 1:51
1801-2000 1:50 or better.
Actual:
7:35.5 2,000m 1:53.8 237 1115 41 180
1:53.0 500m 1:53.0 243 1134 41 175
1:53.0 1,000m 1:53.0 243 1134 40 181
1:54.1 1,500m 1:54.1 236 1110 41 182
1:55.5 2,000m 1:55.5 227 1081 42 182
Gave it a good go, but could get close to target (or Alex!) in the end. I should be delighted, as this is a PB by >8s, but I really had hoped to threaten 7:30. Strangely, HR didn't go up to max. Clearly must try harder!

Great stuff Edward. Biggest milestone there is IMO, and a bit of fly-and-die notwithstanding, you got there will plenty to spare. I've seen comments suggesting that specific training can take up to three splits off (take that with a hefty pinch of salt), so there's probably still plenty left here.edward.jamer wrote: ↑February 19th, 2022, 10:46 amWoke up feeling sad and depressed today. Hitting sub-7 has been a major goal of mine - I knew it was possible for me, and had been working towards it last year.
A bit surprised to see it happen today, given the lack of any distance-specific training for a couple of months.
But there was a lot of targeted work put in since September, so it was really only a matter of time.
My next big goal for the year is a full marathon (any pace accepted; just hoping to finish). That won't even be attempted for a few months.
You only wanted to give up twice? Obviously not going hard enough. I only wanted to give up once in the Skierg 2k I just did... but that feeling lasted the whole second half of the TT.

Good luck with it all, and look for the small victories as you get back up to concert pitch. If it's any consolation (it should be), the fitness and strength do come back quicker than when you earnt them the first time... it's just they don't come back as quickly as we'd all like.

I suspect that as you can achieve a 7:34 2k you're not too far away from a sub 20 5k. It will take a bit of focus on your base fitness, but it's not an far away as you think it is.
Remember the brain is very quick to catastrophise possible scenarios, so you're most recent experiences will be feeding into that. When you build up some good experiences you'll flip that to a positive outlook and then the tide turns...

Thanks Dangerscouse.
Was feeling good when I was training so I feel confident the times are there. Just need to take it easy and ramp it up when ready.
Agree with your sentiments regarding the brain/thought processes.

Thanks folks. It hurt. Lots. Disappointment has now faded, and I can enjoy updating my signature (certainly more fun than actually doing the TT!).
10k next and then probably will TT the 30' (haven't done so this season) and then back to focusing on the rower for a few months.

Re: New Personal Best! Brag About That New Pb!
Last hurrah for the TdS this year.
42:01.3 10,000m 2:06.0 175 901 33 178
8:18.0 2,000m 2:04.5 181 924 33 174
8:22.6 4,000m 2:05.6 176 907 33 176
8:30.0 6,000m 2:07.5 169 881 33 178
8:32.8 8,000m 2:08.2 166 871 32 179
8:17.8 10,000m 2:04.4 182 924 36 187
Absolute purgatory, but a 7s PB nevertheless.
Heart rate tells the story really. It shot up to high 140s in the warm up but I put that down to nerves. Then the first 2k felt pretty good and I was pretty confident sub 41:30 was on the cards... but it seemed a very very long way after that.
Tbh I wasn't sure that I was 100% recovered from Sunday's 2k and I think this confirms that I wasn't. Very similar pace to the 60' I did a few weeks ago, so in that context a bit disappointing, but I really should stop being a malcontent! Four pbs in four weeks is pretty tidy, and I'll be going some to do that next year ( clearly I'm just approaching my athletic peak at 51).
The TdS is very hard to train for during February itself. Think I need a plan for next year.
