I had my first (and I daresay, only) go at a half marathon today.

My target was 1:49/500m pace, for around 1.16:30 (accounting for a little sprint at the end). My plan was gentle negative splitting all the way to the end. This went to plan, for the most part, but then as the finish line approached, I had Jo Andre's time of around 1.16:15 in my head so I pulled out all the stops for the final 3k. Really, really hard, but weirdly, the worst bit was around the hour. I had a hard time not HDing at the hour point, but actually felt a little light-headed after that and almost HDed around 1.03:00.

Anyway, very pleased with the result of 1.16:06.5. It's without a doubt the hardest row I've ever done. My right buttock has cramped, my traps are totally fried and I'm kaput.

Nice one J, does that say 1:29 in your final sprint, if so yikes that’s fast after 21k. Good stuff.

Yeah, that is correct. I went through the line at 1:26 (apologies for poor focus - it's not a great camera on my phone):

Wow, what an amazing row!! Incredible score and paced so well, I can't even imagine a score like this. The HD feeling is right about the time we all seem to get it for the HM but you pushed thru and didn't slow down and got even faster.

Hehe :D As I add more times, I have less and less space for anything else, so I'm forced to edit. I'm definitely much better at this rowing lark than I ever was at lifting weights.

Thank you sir

The funny thing is that I actively don't like doing short distance work now. I know my 2k time is really low hanging fruit, but I just enjoy rowing for a little longer at a slightly lower intensity. That said, on any max effort 5k/30min/10k or more, the last 2k is always well under 7 minutes.

I didn't either! I felt fairly confident about averaging 1:49, which would have resulted in a 1.16:39, but the extra 30 seconds or so was largely down to the motivation of trying to pip your time. It's really odd, but I genuinely felt like I was starting to die at about 1hr 3 minutes, but as soon as I've got less than 10 minutes to go, there seems to be an extra gear, and the splits dropped from about a 1:47/500m average, through 1:46, 1:45, 1:44 until a 1000m to go, where I was doing about 1:40. At 300m out I put the foot down fully to get the splits under 1:30. Definitely the hardest row I've ever done.

Thanks Keith. I really like a gentle negative split through a longer row with a mad sprint to the end. I take the view that I can replace the oxygen after the row has ended

Very strong Stu!! You have really become comfortable with lower stroke rates, I remember when you couldn't even think about keeping that low of a rate for that power/speed.
Thanks mate. Yeah, low rates were always my weakness, and I think my first attempt at a 30r20 was something like 7760m. A bit of effort, humility and patience have all started to pay off.

Many erger here think so, I guess it's the feeling "no matter how hard I row, I have to do exactly XX minutes" vs. "at least I don't have to row as long when I row a bit harder" :)
