Accuracy of Zero Rest Intervals?

Post by jpitchford » December 11th, 2020, 4:44 pm

I’d like to practice my race pace plan by setting up 2K tests as three consecutive “Zero Rest” intervals—-1,100 M, 500 M, and 400 M. Perhaps a dumb question, but will the sum of these three intervals give me an accurate 2K time—-or does some inaccuracy creep in?

Why not set it up as a single 2k piece, but splits of 100m each ? Then you can get a lot more data out of it

Well, I could do that, but I’m just not that good with math in my head while rowing, and I have different targets for each of those three segments (1100M, 500M, 400M) that I would like to see and assess as I go. And If I falter on one segment, I want to “wipe the slate clean” and shoot for my target on the next segment. Obviously, I would not be able to set it up as intervals like that for a race, but for training, it would be educational...for me.

Do you use Ergdata? If so, you could experiment with that while setting up the PM in a few different ways and do some trial runs (at less than full-bore efforts, but varying the pace in your three "blocks") and see what happens.

You should use the Ergzone app. You can programme in your splits and target pace for each split (it shows a small green arrow if you're faster, or a small red arrow if you're slower next to the pace, and just the pace if you're on target) so there's no need to figure it out either during or afterwards.

I would definitely recommend it, not least as your last split will be showing on the screen so you know what you managed and if you need to adjust.

Works fine.

You get some free strokes (strokes well under actual pace) at the beginning of each rep, so it’s not totally accurate for posting on the big board as far as I would guess

I don’t, use it a lot and sometimes its the opposite, first stroke very slow, and I simply keep the same pace. Its just how the first stroke of next rep pans out.

If I wasn’t way out of shape and if I didn’t hate 2Ks as much as I do, I think it would be interesting to test this with 20 x 100m zero rest intervals and see what it does to average pace

Thanks to all for the input. I went ahead and set up my 2K test as three “zero rest” intervals....and it hurt just as much anyway. :D If any inaccuracy creeped in, it can’t be much!
