Fan recommendations?
Can anyone recommend a good fan, looking at a Schallen 18” at £50. Is it a case of you get what you pay for?
Thanks.
Thanks.
Re: Fan recommendations?
Lasko utility fans are a big favorite in the indoor cycling community. Set one back a bit, you still get a good spread pattern, and those things move wicked air.

the duct opening fans blow at a higher speed than the rotary ones -- you just have to set it back a little further. they also give you supermodel hair, so there's that.

Re: Fan recommendations?
I'd go for an "Industrial Air Circulator" or "Industrial Floor Fan", 50CM (20"). You can get them from a hardware store. I have a 20" one I bought from Home Depot (US brand) "Commercial Electric" that was about $50. It moves a lot of air. Its a 3 blade fan, this was where I got it (US) https://www.homedepot.com/p/Commercial- ... /302845111
Its loud as hell but it moves serious air.

Yep I pretty much have that same thing but 20". This is the best type of fan for the money. A larger fan might be quieter but you have to pay serious money for a big pedestal fan and it takes up space and might not get to the height you want. I have the fan sitting on a small table aimed at me.winniewinser wrote: ↑December 9th, 2020, 10:20 am

I have this. You rarely need it on higher than on setting 1 (of 3) in winter, but it'll come into it's own in summer when the gym is 26-30c.

I've got so used to shopping on Amazon, you have to be careful with some stuff.

Re: Fan recommendations?
I bought an industrial floor fan of 76cm diameter with a 3 speed setting. It cost about NZD$350.

You can get some pretty big pedestal fans but the small cheap ones are a waste of time. The floor fan is just the right height for the model D, I just angle it at me from the side. Sits in the middle of the garage by the door, very easy to move or turn sideways to get past it.
You get them from a hardware store or tool supplier.
Yeah they make a bit of noise so you just crank up the music on your rowing playlist on the computer.
Only needs to be on the slowest speed setting.

Re: Fan recommendations?
They put out a lot of air & on high, are loud!! Lowest setting is all that's needed in the height of summer, makes TV viewing okay. But would be best to use ear buds for audio.GreenStratMan wrote: ↑December 9th, 2020, 2:44 pmThese aren't any noisier than the erg are they, the high velocity ones?

Re: Fan recommendations?
The Lasko utility fans are a little quieter, but the noise level is close.
I have an old Honeywell 20" rotary (that they sadly don't make anymore -- the new ones are lower speed so they don't move as much air) in front of the erg. It's close to that volume.
Can you also set up outside? I'm finding that setting the erg on the balcony with the temp in the 40s (farenheit) allows me to just put the fan on the lowest setting.

They are louder, but once you see how much better your splits are when you are actively cooled you will see it's worth it.GreenStratMan wrote: ↑December 9th, 2020, 2:44 pmThese aren't any noisier than the erg are they, the high velocity ones?

Re: Fan recommendations?
Kevin,
Are you in the N or S hemisphere? I ask because I have to wonder how much cooling power you need, especially if it's winter where you are currently (which I'm guessing it is). Are you erging someplace that's particularly warm, even in the winter, or do you have a problem overheating even in moderate temps?
I'll admit that I probably keep my house cooler than most, but in the winter I find low humidity to be a bigger issue than overheating. At most, a gently breeze to stir things up a bit is all I need, if anything. In the summer having some good airflow definitely helps.
I guess I'm suggesting that you be sure you match the fan's CFM range (or whatever the metric equivalent is where you are) to what you need. No sense in getting way more than what the job requires.
