Seat grinds to halt?
Hi all,
I have fairly new rollers, less than a year old I think. Recently I’m getting a loud screeching sound and my seat grinds to a halt near the end of my stroke when legs are almost fully extended. Normally I would attribute this to worn out rollers, but they look pretty good to me, are under a year old, and I estimate about 3,000,000m on them. After a row, I do find more of the white material from the rollers on one side of the rail than the other. Also I notice some paint scraped off on the left Underside of the rail in the area I fell the seat is halting. Lastly, I find myself repositioning my seating position very frequently during a row. Starting to think maybe I have a posture/leaning problem? How long should rollers last? I have a feeling my problem is substantially more than rollers. And what do the lower rollers do? The scratch I see on the side of the rail looks like it could be lower roller related. Thanks,

Hello Dave: The lower rollers control how snugly the seat fits to the monorail. There are 3 sets of holes that are provided for adjustment. Are they in the same corresponding holes, left vs right?

Yes the lower rollers are in same spots. Both are not at all firmly pushing up against the underside of the rail. In fact, I’m wondering if the seat might be lifting up and upper roller jumping from edge of roller hanging over side of rail to on top of rail.

Sounds like a technique problem.
The white seat rollers are not supposed to break up and last a long time. Sounds like the seat is trying to skew because it has an uneven force on it from the left to the right hand side. The lower roller is there just to prevent accidental lift, which shouldn't be happening unless the seat is trying to lift off the mono rail. It never contacts the rail with the correct technique.
I have replaced the seat roller bearings on my rowers. Moved from the metal shielded Chinese bearing to some Japanese 2RS or rubber shielded bearings of the same size. If you sweat alot the standard bearings just end up seizing up.
You appear to have some uneven leg forces going on, I never need to readjust my seating position during a row, either that you have one leg significantly longer than the other.

Simple check - have someone else of similar proportions sit on the erg and slide back and forth. If the seat seizes up, it's a mechanical issue. If it doesn't, it's you.

Yes, I’m pretty sure it’s a technique problem. I’ve got poor posture and right shoulder AC tear, making one arm reach further than the other.
