The Virus thread - Is COVID-19 affecting your training program?

Post by lancecampeau » March 12th, 2020, 7:45 pm

At present... this situation seems to be growing rapidly. Now I'm lucky enough to have a rower at home, but I'm curious to hear if anyone has avoided training in public gyms as a precaution...?

Also, I'll be pretty bummed if they cancel the Olympics because I've been looking forward to watching the rowing events online this year.

Any thoughts?

Here (Italy) such places and most others have all been closed. No point in delaying what has to be done soon anyway.

Same in Denmark. I am a member of a rowing club and a kayaking club. Both were closed down yesterday. We are allowed to go and get our gear, but we are not allowed to use the training facilities or any other facilities.

I have even heard that some other clubs have closed down so hard that members are not allowed to come and get their gear.

Luckily, I have bought a used rower from my rowing club, so I can train at home.

Not yet, but SATS and a few other big fitness clubs are closing so it's just a matter of time here in Sweden too.

my gym is still open for business fortunately here in Sydney (but have an erg at home as well just in case). Much prefer the gym to train tho.
"They" have just cancelled the Melbourne F1 completely and all major sporting events are being played with no one there to watch - it is the first weekend for our major football codes and the end of the international cricket season and finals of the NBL. We live in curious times.

Not much difference here in England. I have got my own erg so I'm able to cope if they do decide to impose tougher measures

Here in the Puget Sound region of Washington state - the epicenter of the epidemic in the USA, things are getting shut down - school activities, large gatherings, all sports, some schools in the Seattle area completely.

Our local rowing club's junior team has cancelled practices. We're loaning the club ergs out to the juniors that want to continue training.

I don't go to gyms - I have an erg and weights at home, but my wife works in one. It is not well managed and I expect it to be shut down, maybe involuntarily, shortly. However, since she has been home recuperating from a broken arm and leg since January and I'm retired, we're "automatically" in self quarantine, so we're good. When I do have to go out into populated places (to buy groceries mostly), I'm very careful. Our localized area, so far, is not affected.

As Anth_F says, stay safe.

As strange as it sounds its been a good thing for Rowpro. There has been an explosion in the number of Chinese suddenly rowing online because they cannot get to the water or cannot leave home to exercise.

The SRC or Shanghai Rowing Club has setup a full Regatta at the end if March. Three age categories and four events over the weekend. The big bonus is the timezone for me so no rowing in the middle of the night either.

Well... its official... all gyms in Quebec are closed for a minimum of 2 weeks. Looks like I need to go pick up a few kettle bells to supplement my rowing at home.

Just been notified that boat club where I do my Thursday night gym sessions and OTW adults recreational has now closed until at least after Easter  ... been looking forward to when the clocks change and the lighter evenings so could get back out on the water. Seems that will be way off now.

My son also came home from school today with a cough. Seems like under the new guidelines cough or temperature means self-isolation. Felt rather depressed by the whole thing this evening and had extra choccy biscuits and gave the erg a miss. Means more distance tomorrow to make it up!

Here's a different take on it-everything here is shutting down but I work in paratransit and we are desperately trying to keep vehicles on the road to get our folks to their dialysis, cancer treatments and even food shopping but it's not easy as we are losing numbers to quarantine and attrition as positive cases are surfacing among our clients and drivers. And we are just at the beginning of the wave. We are down to bare bones staffing and frankly, I just don't have luxury of erging at the moment so my carefully scripted plan of completing the 10k portion has taken a hit, although I sat down for a head clearing slow 5k today.

How is your routine impacted by the virus?

For me fitness center and rowing club closed down and my own rowing machine is in Austria where I cannot
get to it. So now mostly jogging and have a stationary bike available. Lots of squat jumps.

May not be a bad idea to take a break off rowing since after the last race (30 mins, 8129) I was more or less completely wiped out having overdone it a little.

Very hefty total for 30’. Chapeau.

My WEC meters about 50k over 5 days. Self-sequestered means more time on the erg.

My gym closed as of 11:00pm last night. No more Model D's.
I was shopping to buy one for home but need permission from the wife.
