Training plan help

Post by rcutting » September 3rd, 2019, 8:47 am

I would really value some help from the forum formulating a rowing training plan to help with my running (hill/fell) over the winter months. Running will still be main focus (specificity and all that!), but I'm finding the rowing excellent for intervals, core strength etc and would like to apply it in a more systematic way. Currently running 3-4 times a week (long run at weekend), erg 2-3 times a week, mainly short hard intervals. Is this a good place to start? Could I get more out of it? I'm 46yrs old, around 80kg. Running distances up to marathon (off road). Lots of hill around here!
Thanks for any ideas!

You have to decide what you need.
If endurance, 40-50k a week should do the trick, slow but hard.
If uphill sprinting ability, intervals of appropriate number and length.
Probably a bit of both.
Rowing won't offer any eccentric loads, which may be a problem if you run steep and rough downhill too.
08-1940, 183cm, 83kg.
2024: stroke 5.5W-min@20-21. ½k 190W, 1k 145W, 2k 120W. Using Wods 4-5days/week. Fading fast.

Thanks jamesg, tried a 10k tonight...think I need to work on all aspects of this rowing thing! Mainly I want endurance with better core/upper body strength so will do as suggested...
