How does one effectively train for a 6K piece? Simple question. What would you do?

I'd do what I'm doing now which is lots of long distance rows, half hour minimum with most being a 10k to one hour session with the ocassional hm. I do 2 easy, one medium, two hard sessions plus one very long session a week. All my long distance times have dropped dramatically doing that.

I agree with Rogus here in that it is an endurance distance and the question is as valid for 5k and 10 etc .... you need to row longer distance pieces and work on rowing them at a faster even pace. This will develop you aerobic ability then it is just the simple matter of upping your spm rate and holding on for the duration.

Most people would row a 10k at about 27/28 spm and a 5k around the 30spm rate I woud think and this extra rate with the same effort per stroke will bring about a faster pace.

6k is just a 5k where you postpone dying just a little longer but they really are fast high rate work and very demanding but really satisfying and will have a direct impact on bring down your 2k time I believe.

- George
