Hey new folks. Karyn didn’t say enough. She is our resident expert in rowing. I can and will help but she is truly the pro with technique and stuff. Nice to see you again Karyn and I hope that shoulder gets back to normal so you can kick some butt next season on the water.
Your not so secret admirer. Grin.
You make me blush Thor!

I finally did hop on the erg today. I only went about 4,500 meters, but it's a start. The shoulder was tight, but no pain. I set the damper at 2 (a drag factor of about 93) and just rowed a very light steady state piece. I'll probably row like this for a while and slowly ease myself back into longer and/or harder pieces.

Thanks for welcoming me back. Sorry I can't offer more meters at the moment.

Karyn

And such a pretty blush it is too. Grin.
Well I tried to row yesterday and it is still too soon for me. I fear it will be a while yet for the mighty Thor.
Hang in there Karyn and keep on rock'n.

And what DOES today bring? How about two paddlers and two new canoes?!

Image Another episode....

The classic film "The Sound of Music" opens with the convent's gal Maria singing "the hills are alive..." in a wildflower covered mountain meadow. Many years later, on a snow-covered mountain berm (albeit there ARE wildflowers there in a few months...), the hills ARE indeed alive! Taking my trusty mini Joby spotlight, I check the fence line for crouching coyote, hidden fangs. And what do I see? What seems like a gazillion little glowy bunny eyes...these bunnies are just hanging out on the hillside....surely having just deposited little bunny bivlets on my side of the fence. Bunny bivlets? You've not heard of these? They are a highly sought after puppy delicacy...

Image

But I digress....snort. The glowy eyes phenomenon is called eyeshine....and it's all about those that have them being able to function in their nocturnal world.

A posting called Keystone Wild! Notes reports:

"But why do some animals exhibit the eerie glow of eyeshine while others do not? It all has to do with a special, mirror-like membrane at the back of the eye, called the tapetum lucidum, meaning “bright tapestry.” As light enters the eye, it passes through the retina and is reflected from this tapestry of cells, sending the light back through the retina, providing twice the light as would be available normally. Thus, when a bright light, such as a spotlight or headlights, is shone into the eyes of such a creature, their eyes appear to glow, giving them the spooky eyeshine." Human eyes have evolved for the mostly daylight world (sorry to those who work the night shift) and we don't have the tapetum structure.

Even better, and helping identify those creatures of the night, different animals have different colors of eyeshine. "Spotlighting will point out those animals with a tapetum. Foxes and rabbits eyes glow red; many felids (cats) exhibit a greenish shine; raccoons have yellowish eyeshine; bullfrogs show green. Most owls show red eyeshine." The author notes that not everyone agrees on the colors that each species exhibits. For me, those bunnies have yellow glowy eyes...and so do the dogs. Wiki says: "Eyeshine occurs in a wide variety of colors including white, blue, green, yellow, pink and red. However, since eyeshine is a type of iridescence, the color varies with the angle at which it is seen and the minerals which make up the reflective tapetum-lucidum crystals. White eyeshine occurs in many fish, especially walleye; blue eyeshine occurs in many mammals such as horses; green eyeshine occurs in mammals such as cats, dogs, and raccoons; and red eyeshine occurs in coyote, rodents, opossums and birds."

And now you know more about eyeshine...and what I think about capers...hahaha...although some of you might think I've been in the moonshine....

This team forum is a continual learning experience of the decidedly quirky! Very fun. I now need to casually insert "eyeshine" into casual conversation ... and try to convince anyone that bivlets is a real word. (But, capers are still dee-licious!)

Actually, I did do a nod to Ed on the 10th, when he reach 37 million - I posted a 37k (only 999 to go! Ed, you are AMAZING).

But yesterday's effort was more something that Wim could related to. I tried to get clever with intervals, but for some reason my PM3 (and hence log entry) is not very good at basic maths. Spot the issue below!

It is not the first time I have seen a glitch, my favourite is for a row I did back in the days when rowing a long distance meant 2000m :D

I must have been "in the zone", I don't really remember how the row went, but boy was I tired at the end

Image

Shame there is not a competition to see who can row furthest in exactly 3 minutes 30.8 seconds

Looks like a rounding error in that first one.

Now that second row... What kind of rocket did you have strapped to your back? And did you pass out from the G-forces? That's a mighty pace for 500m. That's 700mph (1125km/hr). Almost MACH-1, so you didn't quite break the sound barrier. But you got close. Hopefully next time you can get that last 50mph improvement and hit MACH-1.
