Just a few more days....summmmr will be official !

ImageSome of you may remember a song that had a line in it about "I don't like spiders and snakes.." well, you can add toads to that list for me. Had one hop out practically at eye level when trimming back a plant. Don't know which one of us was the more surprised...the toad, me or K9 Kona. Had to go put a dollar in the cuss jar.

Yep, almost time to do the welcome summmmmr row...or the welcome fall if you're in the southern hemisphere. You don't have to do the entire row in one rowing session, but it is an excellent opportunity to tack on 97 more meters and call it a good half marathon (if that's on your list!).

Season meters as of 45/365 = 22,208,934 m

Total meters on the day = 276,021 m

Oars in space (participation) = 33 percent

Yes the number is significant. It has to do with Secretariat in the Kentucky Derby. Funny about Toad. I was moving a wood pile last week. When I saw a snake with a toad in his mouth. and a group of 15 toads around them and of course the dogs helped out. I never heard of a curse jar

Ah. Well done, Richard T! Nothing like a good horse race, unless it's a good horse story! Secretariat's winning time is very much so numerically significant...and it's a great story. Wiki says: On his way to a still-standing track record (1:59 2⁄5), Secretariat ran each quarter-mile segment faster than the one before it. The successive quarter-mile times were 25 1⁄5, 24, 23 4⁄5, 23 2⁄5, and 23. This means he was still accelerating as of the final quarter-mile of the race. No other horse had won the Derby in less than 2 minutes until Monarchos in 2001 (which was 1:59 4/5). (Try rowing each split faster than the previous in a 2K workout...whoa...)
And from Secretariat's web site : To come up with the horse’s ”fractional” times, experts began with the electronically-recorded times for the leader for each of the five quarter miles of the 1 1/4 miles Derby. Then, by figuring Secretariat’s racing position in relation to those times, they were able to extrapolate Secretariat’s own times for each quarter mile.
And, because the jockey can be just as important as the horse, hats off to Ron Turcotte, hall of fame jockey who guided Secretariat to wins in each of the three Triple Crown races.

Here's a link to the YouTube video of Secretariat winning the Kentucky Derby....gives you chills !

you can add toads to that list for me. Had one hop out practically at eye level when trimming back a plant. Don't know which one of us was the more surprised...the toad, me or K9 Kona. Had to go put a dollar in the cuss jar.
That's hilarious, but only because I can totally visualize it! I grabbed on to a little tree frog (they come out when it rains, and stick to anything they can jump onto, which includes people. Ugh :!: ) when I took the handle of the trash bin to put out by the road for trash pick-up. I felt it squish and was totally grossed out! I cussed, and cussed and cussed! Glad we don't have a cuss jar.

Summer Solstice Challenge
Image...in two days (or one if you're Baz, Angelo, Dave or Bernie!)...

June 20

In honor of the longest day of the year, we invite you to participate in the Summer Solstice Challenge.

The Details
■Row or ski 21,000 meters on June 20.
■Meters can be rowed/skied all at once in one workout or over several workouts throughout the day.
■If you add on 97 more meters to row/ski 21,097 meters, or a half-marathon, it needs to be rowed/skied all at once in order to qualify to be a ranked piece.
■This is an individual challenge. (You do not need to belong to a team to participate.)
■Meters must be entered online.
■Indoor rower, SkiErg, on water and on snow meters count. You can combine meters to reach 21,000 meters.

When Concept2 sponsors such an event, do they just put $$$ towards it or do they have a booth there (you could have demo'd the rowing machine for them for certain!). Curiosity...

Some of the team likes Toads - here is Akira with a garden friend. The toads in our yard get to ride on swings and get taken down slides, etc. Our elementary school's mascot is a frog and there is an annual frog jumping competition. Oh yeah, and there are cusses followed by time outs when the toads are brought into the house.

What a great photo - and the Connecticut toads look a lot more friendly than the Colorado toads...or maybe it's Akira that makes all the difference!
