Hi All!

Had a pretty quiet weekend on the rowing front. I'm trying to throw off a cough at the moment, but it just won't go. Did a very easy 10k piece on Saturday, but nothing since.

Really proud of everyone who is racking up those metres for the team. Team Oarsome are up pretty close behind us, but we're back in 6th. Good going girls - good luck for a good week!

QOL

Jenny

Hello, everyone!

Jenny and Ellen, I hope you're well again soon.

I did something really beneficial yesterday: I had a friend take some video footage of me rowing. Boy, did I learn some things! Before I rowed, I watched the C2 technique video again to refresh my memory of what it's _supposed_ to look like.

1) My stroke is not smooth. I was generally keeping the chain in the same plane the whole time, but there was a distinct wobble in the chain between when my legs were done and when my arms finished off.
I'm trying to fix this by keeping my back and arms engaged throughout the stroke rather than lazily/ weakly letting them finish it off.

2) My knees still hyperextend (backwards) at the finish - they sort of flop down. I already knew this was a problem, but I keep forgetting to fix it. This is a really easy way to ruin my knees, and it's a little extra work to get them back into a good position for the recovery. I'm trying to fix this by keeping my legs in a strong position the whole time, rather than letting them relax at the finish.

3) On a positive note, hey, my upper back looks pretty good!

4) Yep, I definitely look like my mother.

A lot of digital cameras have a video setting on them (mine's a Canon S400). A few minutes of video can show you a LOT. I highly recommend doing this to all of the newbies, and I'm sure the more experienced folks can tell you how useful it is.

Just working on #1 and #2 above made a big difference in efficiency - it was a lot easier to go a lot faster. I plan on taking more video in a few weeks to make sure what I learned stuck. (I'm not ready to send it in to Concept2 for review yet - maybe I'll do that when I'm ready for fine-tuning.)

Tonight is my rest night, so I hope to catch up (meter-wise) to you all later in the week. Have a great Monday!

-Dawn

Hiya Ducks!

Just checking in! I have 115,286 meters to row between now and June 5th if I am going to make my goal.

My husband and I finished the first part of our Learn to Row sessions with Boulder Community Rowing yesterday! We learned how to feather and I got some new blisters! We got to row a lot more than the previous day. It was great! The weather this weekend was absolutely perfect.

The one thing that surprised me the most about rowing on the water was how heavy the boat is and how light the oars are! We had to carry the boat down to the water and I have bruises on both shoulders from that, but the overall experience is well worth a few sore shoulders!

We have already signed up for the next learn to row sessions, which start in June, three mornings a week for three weeks. We are really looking forward to getting back on the water. I have to say that the thing that impressed me the most was how friendly everyone we met from the rowing club is. We had a terrific coach and each day that we rowed (there were 4 people in our class) 4 experienced rowers rowed with us and another experienced rower volunteered to be our coxswain each day. These nice people took four hours out of their busy schedules on Saturday and Sunday to come out and help us learn! They were all very patient, encouraging and helpful. A nicer group of people would be very hard to find! Thanks to all from the Boulder Community Rowing! We really appreciated everything!

Dawnald Duck #4 cracked me up, good luck with #1 & 2

Personally I’ve given myself permission to have mediocre workouts. I had gotten too caught up with having a “good” workout and tended to skip workouts all together when I feel blah. So I’ve had a few mediocre workouts which means I’m getting more exercise than when I was waiting to feel well enough get in a good workout.

Hi Harly!
Welcome to the 50's! They aren't all that bad. I hope you have a great day!

Gee - is the pond becoming a more mature place? Nah!!! Never!
All of us Ducks are young at heart! I have to run over to the rankings and see you in my category, though!

Happy Birthday from the Buffle!

I thought it might be time to check in!

Today my husband had our first session in the second part of the learn to row classes. We had to get up at 4:30 a.m. to be at the water by 5:20 with the goal of being on the water by 5:30. Our group was missing a person, so we had to borrow one of the experienced rowers, and we got a bit of a late start. We really liked our group and our coach. We didn't get a whole lot of rowing because none of had been on the water in about 3 weeks and we worked alot on our technique. Being out on the water so early, watching the sun and hot air balloons come up makes for a wonderful way to start our day.

We will be rowing three days a week for the next three weeks, and then move on to the novice program. So far we are really enjoying it!

Yesterday was our first wedding anniversary and I am very excited that I was able to reach my million meter goal on time!

Woohoo! Congratulations on the million meters (we knew you could do it!) and the anniversary, Kathi! Very inspiring stuff. I hope you have a great time on the water, and please keep providing reports! Maybe one day when I get my times down a LOT, I will be joining the ranks of the on-water Ducks. The hardest part would be turning into a morning person.

Finally I'm back rowing again at the Y again. My abdominal hernia surgery was 15 days ago and haven't been able to row for about 18 days. Had a lot of discomfort last three days before surgery. Also abdominal muscle pain after surgery was much more than I had expected.

Anyway I worried about getting down and getting back up. I had worried about bending enough to reach monitor with feet strapped in but none of the above was a problem. I only rowed 2000 meters. Will go for 4k tomorrow and then if everything is OK, I will go for 6k on Thursday. I have to get my daily average back up to get back on the 5000 meter board. At one time I was on the 7500 but have slipped to page 8 of the 2500 board.

Glad to see that lots of people have been doing lots of rowing so we are still in 7th place. Congratulations to Kathi on reaching her goal. Gabriela is doing a terrific job and is a huge inspiration.

Just glad to be back and adding a bit to our total.

Ellen
29 more pounds to go before I reward myself with a Model D at home.

I see on the 10k meter honor board she is in the top 20 and it looks like she is the rowingest female.

Ellen

Thanks Ellen!, I didn´t see your post, well, actually, I have a long time without posting!.

I´m traying to study a little, I´m studying "Kinesiologia"... I don´t know how to say it in english... but this career is about "phisical recovering", wih massages and a lot of machines, like sorth wave. It´s a branch of the medicine, It´s very popular between sport people, besides other uses, like recovery for burned skin or some kinds of post operating, like a leg or an arm.
So, now, I have to study all the human body, most of all, the muscles and nerves. It´s driving me crazy!! there are so many difficult names! and a lot of stuff to remember.

But, doing a hard work with my study, I can row in the same day... I can´t stop trainnig now! Besides, is good for me to clean my mind a little bit... too much study makes me crazy!

Well Ducks, keep erging!!, Cheers for all!!

AAH!! Happy birthday Harly!! (late but sure ) I hope you had a wonderfull day... you deserve it!.

And KatiS! keep erging hard! you almost have it!!.

Hi all,
Congratulations on million meters and birthdays. I hope to start adding some meters. I just graduated yesterday with a degree in nursing. The last couple of weeks have been hectic with papers to write, getting a symposium together about ethics, along with the clinical time at the hospital. But it's done! Yeah!!! Now all I have to do is pass my boards and look for a job. I kind of have enjoyed not having a real job, but I need to start earning some money again. So anyway, hopefully I'll rack up some meters in the next two weeks before I go on vacation to Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Later, Karen

Hi!

I've been keeping an eye on all you Ducks over the last 10 days or so - the numbers just seem to keep on growing!! Welcome to all the new Ducks, and I hope you get as much out of being part of the team as I have.

I have not been erging for a while now. My cough has gone at last (for the second time) but I am still blowing into a Peak Flow Metre morning and evening to see what my lungs are up to. Hope to go and see the Doctor on Friday to see if it looks like asthma or not as I seem to have been getting unexplained coughs for some time now.

I'm going to do a gentle session tonight and see how I get on - it is sooooo frustrating to see everyone overtake me... But great that everyone is piling on the metres. Are people going to do the Summer Solstice Challenge next week? 20,000m during the day - can be several sessions or just one, or you may want to up the distance to a HM and get that distance under your belt. Watch timing with breaks etc though. Check out the Challenges page of your Personal Logbook for details.

PS got my marathon mug through today So that made me feel a bit better!

Keep up the good work

Jenny
