What's this? A dose of reality?

Ranger wrote:Dec 16, 2010 If I get _really_ used to this rowing, I think I might eventually be able to do 20 x 500m, 1:31 @ 36 spm (13 SPI). That would predict a 1:31/6:04 2K.

Jan 5, 2011: I am rowing right at my target (1:34/6:16 for 2K at 60 years old), at race rate and pace, every day.

Jan 10, 2011: My target (as a heavyweight) for Indianapolis in three weeks is 6:28, rowing well (13 SPI) at low drag (119 df.).

Jan 27, 2011: At 28 spm, I now do 1:39. So, if I can row the 2K right through, I should do the first 1700m at 1:39. Then, I'll just see what I can do, giving it the gun from there to the end. If I have something left, and can put on a big kick, 6:32 might be possible. If I don't have anything left, I'll just try to hold on to the 1:39s and finish in 6:36.
Then today:

Yes, I am.

I have done a couple dozen lightweight races (but only a handful of heavyweight races).

I am just going to beat all of the heavyweights this year, too.

:D :D

I want to see if I can win a heavyweight hammer (I already have a lightweight hammer).

No male under 70 has ever won both a heavyweight and lightweight hammer.

Why?

For males under 70, the heavyweight and lightweight WRs differ by an average of 20 seconds, five seconds per 500m.

I'll row as a lightweight in my last two regattas, at Chicago and Detroit, but for other purposes.

To see if I can break the 60s lwt WR.

I can row at either weight--and have.

I have done 6:27.5, 6:28.5, and 6:29.7 as a heavyweight.

I have done 6:28, 6:29, and 6:30 as a lightweight.

No difference.

No, you aren't. As you yourself have demonstrated, you cannot race at weight, you are nowhere close to 165, and therefore you are NOT a lightweight. If you were, you'd be racing as such.

Moreover, in REAL sculling, OTW, ltwt is 160, 2 hours before the start time. You don't have a chance in hell of doing that.

face it, rangerboy, you're a small heavyweight.

13 hours till cratertime!

True.

I haven't been rowing at low drag (119 df.) very long at all.

Tomorrow will be my best race so far at low drag.

But from there on, I will get better and better.

ranger

À lie, you tried every year since 2003. Every season you failt and wacked the drag back up to max. You wil do That again this year.

Sure.

So, what's a "pretty solid" row for a 30s heavyweight like you?

The hwt WRs in our age divisions differ by 50 seconds over 2K.

So...

If 6:42-6:47 might be "pretty solid" for me, 5:52-5:57 might be "pretty solid" for you.

How is it goin' with that?

If you can manage to row as a skinny again, 5:52 would also slip under the lwt WR for your age group, by quite a margin, as I am going to try to do in my last two regattas at Chicago and Detroit.

Nope.

I have only raced at low drag once.

And I have never trained at a full range of rates using a low drag, as I do now.

My technique wasn't good enough.

It's _very_ good now, though.

As I mentioned, I can now even row on minimal drag (77 df.) and get pretty much full pressure on the chain with my legs.

I now have the length, timing, sequencing, balance, and angles of leverage to take full advantage of doing my paces at a low drag, low rate, and high ratio.

Quick, light drive; long, controlled recovery.

Efficiency goes sky high.

77 df. is too low, but next year, I might consider dropping the drag from 119 df. to 100 df.

119 df. is feeling pretty heavy.

Not raced moron trained, It will be fun to watch you the next 6 weeks. You again will be slower and again won,t come within a light year of any of your "Goals"

Btw 119 is not low drag at all, it is normal drag. But it's all irrelevant, you will be back up big time soon.

Indianapolis: DNS(start)

The TSO was there. I arrived around 9 am and from the looks of it (buckets of sweat) he had been there awhile. Building opened at 8:00 am. He kept walking the erg forward quite a bit while warming up. Lots of RWB. No jumping rope or biking the kinectic. could have been any easy paddle for him -- winner was 6'47".
A bit after 10:00 am, he stopped, picked up his gear and left the building. DNS. insufficient muscle grease? did not see his sweep technique, which I was interested in seeing.

Paul Randall did show and the current >90 world record holder qualified for Boston with a time somewhere around 10'50". Congrats to him. Until the next race I guess.

2 b - thanks for the update. on one level, how ineffably sad.

on another, utterly pathetic.

so, who wins the beers? didn't someone predict a DNS?
