Does it really matter about the rpms, stroke rate, and all that if my heart rate is in the target zone? I was reading some posts thinking I must be a real mess on the machine:-) I am not sure what it all means (rpm and such) but my HR gets to where I want it and it stays there throughout my workout. Any thoughts on technique and how to improve it? Or can I just get on and row for my allotted time:-) ???
The main purpose of erging is to get fit, and it'll have that effect anyway if you see some sweat. It happens more easily and safely if your technique is appropriate. This basically means pulling full length strokes (so that the legs get to do some work too), against low drag, with good posture (straight back) which helps to carry the potentially large loads that appear during the pull.
Are you using the HR range idea for your training bands?
As you get fitter, your HR will drop for any given load; your good technique will then be needed, for the larger loads you'll be able to carry.
So you do both: get on and row for the allotted time AND make sure you're rowing well.

I really have been concentrating on my stroke and I do see improvement in my stroke count:-) I also realize I have been going to far forward because I have not developed the blisters I used to when I first got my Concept 2. And I have put in quite a bit of time in the last week with no blisters on my heels!!! Thank you:-)

If you want to be more efficient and enjoy your rowing (and get better at it) why not learn how to do it correctly? There are coaches that can be found on this forum that can help you become a better rower.
I found one here (he did not charge me) and met him locally at his health club. After one lesson I am rowing much better.
