Hi everyone - I was thinking of trying yet another handicap race - this time 6k since we've beaten ourselves up so mercilessly on 5ks for 3 weeks in a row. Anyone interested is welcome to sign up on the e-row server.

Do we list our PB for the calendar year (since Jan 1 2004) or for the rowing year (since May 1, 2004)? My times are quite different 20:18.9 vs 20:45.0 If it is the latter, I might even have a chance not to be last against all the newcomers.

Cheers,

Paul Flack

I don't know if I can do this 6K, it does not fit in with my training programme at this moment in time, I am tempted though. I will see if I can jiggle it about a bit tonight.

For the next handicap event why don't we try a 4K, just to be different any body fancy a go at that?

Sir Pirate

Hi Paul - you can use either your season best or personal best - as long as you're appropriately aggressive - no sandbagging! Some of us are now unfortunately in the position of our season best BEING the personal best, so there's nowhere to hide!

Sir_Pirate - I hope you can join us. Your idea of a 4k sounds intriguing. I'm always up for a change of distance, just to keep things interesting! The challenge will be that many people won't have a season best or personal best at this distance (unless they participated in LeTour), so we may have a bit of estimating involved in setting the target times.

Perhaps we should set the 4k for a couple weeks from now, and ask that people try to do a "level-setting" 4k practice row in advance if they don't have a 4k time from LeTour. And for LeTour participants: you can't hide! 4k times will have to be as good as or better than your LeTour time, or you'll need to have a REALLY good excuse!

Wow - I'm impressed! Either we're all masochists or the handicap really is a big draw! Once again, this handicap row seems to be filling up fast. Within 10 hours, we're up to 7 rowers:

I've created an overflow race in case we have more than 8 rowers - and we can re-split the group if that happens.

Yikes! Ernie and I are only one second apart again! Last week's race was a serious punishment for me - I caught him then blew up and fell apart. Let's see if I can return the favor this week - watch out Ernie!

Hi Mark
I should change my time. I did a 22:26 in Nigels race today. I had a great race with Ernie until the last 500. I had nothing left. I will change it on the server. Thanks Steve G

Hey Mark,

Yes...Steve drove me into the ground and I cut a few secs off my time. I'm now at 22.18.8. I changed my time for the race on the server and will add the additional secs to my wait time....

Thanks for organizing this. Should be fun.

Here's an idea for a dark winter saturday

a 5k handicapted race....but at the end of every 1k you have to get off the blasted machine and do 20 reps of some exercise (pushups, sit ups, etc - maybe we alternate)....then jump back on. sort of a mini-biathalon

Best, Ernie

Mark - My wife just notified me that 3 of my 4 kids have hockey games in the middle of the day (EST) tomorrow, and I need to be driving to the rinks. I'm disappointed. Was looking forward to another fun race.

I will withdraw from the race to open up a spot for somebody else.

Hope you guys have fun. Thanks again for organizing this.

Best, Ernie

Wow - Ernie you're shaving time off all the time! Good luck in the hockey games! (I'm only partly relieved you won't be driving ME into the ground tomorrow, but alas I still have to try to hold my own against Steve!)

Okay, so after the new times and two new entrants have signed up, here are the latest lane assignments and start times:

Bert signed up for the overflow race, and I will put him into the main heat, although he will be our latest sharkbait unless he provides a target time!

Thanks everyone - and good luck tomorrow!
Good effort by you Guys, I was cruising along at 1:43 till 3500m and thought to myself, slow down the pace a bit or you will blow. I eased up to 1:45-1:46 for 1500m and then put the pace back up again for the last 1000m

I should of not eased up for that 1500m, as I had far to much left at the end. I should of had a big pb today, feels like I have not even been on the rower today.
Bit disappointed. Great row by all you others, Cees doing a 20:30 I think

Don't know what the others did, how many pb's?

Sir Pirate

What a great race! Lots of chase down action going on!

We had at least 3 new PB's, assuming Cees' and Steve's target were their existing PBs. I also bettered my former PB, and the 2 of the 3 guys in the overflow race beat their targets as well. I'm still waiting for one file to put up a rerow of the overflow race, but here are the results as shown on the server:

The main race was pretty intense, with at least a couple people starting off at very aggressive paces. Steve ran me through the grinder, putting up occasional 1:49 splits that had me panicked that I'd never catch him (or if I did, that I'd blow up like last week against Ernie). Andy put up some impressive splits too - quite a few 1:54's from what my screen showed!

The final 2k of the race was a blur for me. I vaguely recall catching up to Andy and Steve, and then seeing Cees blast into view like an express train. Cees blasted by all of us like we were standing still, although we all tried to jump into his wake and slipstream in for some extra speed.

In a delusional flash of ambition, I did an out-of-body sprint for the finish, thinking I might have a chance of tying Cees at the finish. But my legs and lungs said "you must be kidding" and I had to be content with watching the supershark cross the line with a huge 2 second margin over me. Perhaps I should have started the sprint earlier, but given Cees' power, there's NO WAY I would have been able to keep up, and probably would have blown up well before the finish line. As it was, I didn't even have enough left to complete the final stroke. For the first time, I know what it feels like to empty the tanks COMPLETELY!

Thanks to all for an incredible race - I look forward (with some trepidation) to the next one!
