Reporting In for 2010

Post by DuluthMoose » May 5th, 2009, 11:53 am

I'm back.... Is there another challenge going on? Some of you are still posting huge numbers!

Gina - Thanks for posting the news story. Your daughter is incredibly calm and cool in front of a camera. And Mankato is in south central Minnesota in Agriculture country. I live 300 miles north in north east Minnesota in the northwoods. Different worlds...

Dan - I'll see your New Glarus Spotted Cow and raise you an Uff Da!

Kiba - Good to see your post. Hope to see more! Is the ice off the lakes in London, Ontario! I think my Lee Valley Tool catalog is based from your fine city.

My wife and I had two fine days on the Current River, although they were rainy and storm threatening. On the third day we went from "flood watch" to "80% chance of flood warning" so we went to the general store to take a look at the weather radar. With thunderstorms and heavy rain breaking out 100 miles west of us, we decided to break camp and bail out. The river was rising and it had been just a little "pushy" the day before. Most everyone there decided not to push their luck. So we packed up our muddy wet gear and took the long way home along the Mississippi River. We had intended to paddle for as many as 5 days and we had only 2. But they were certainly memorable days. Here is a picture of a proposal for marriage that happened about 3 miles downriver on our Thursday paddle in the rain!

I think that was pretty classy and about as romantic as a river rat can get! And she said YES!

Gotta be pretty tough to live there

No wonder these Aussies are good rowers - they have to be pretty sturdy folk to wrangle giant spiders, avoid sharks with lasers while kayaking....looks like the safest spot to live is in the middle of the continent.....

A sadly innacurate effort Chris... Danni Minogue does not live in Sydney any more!
Also, it fails to mention Sabre Tooth Wombats, and the scary >>Drop Bears<<!

Lee Valley Tools is here in London, it's pretty awesome that you get their catalogue.

We got our last snow in April and it's quickly becoming summer now.

BAZzy: I can't believe you kept rowing after you noticed the spider. If I notice so much as a non poisonous tree ant on the floor across the room I'm forced to get up and annihilate.. for fear it might infiltrate my home..

Drop bears, funny ad ... but I don't understand a word they're saying, other than "tree" and "head" ... and, of course, the product placement ... :)

Spiders

Post by Toothdoc » May 5th, 2009, 9:40 pm

We have a nasty little bugger down here in Fla known as the brown recluse.
Not very big and not very aggressive but if he/she bites you; ouch!

I am proud to announce that I just completed 12 Million LTM as of yesterday. That means another glass for my collection. At 13 I think I'll start my sock collection.

Gerbel

Post by Toothdoc » May 5th, 2009, 9:59 pm

This week-end at my family gathering I was extolling the virtues of rowing and teeling the story of our team when someone said all that rowing kind of seems like a gerbil in a cage. Therefore I have been considering a name change to The Gerbil. Any thoughts on that one?

Danno ....our team has the whole universe to experience on our way to the moon...but all rats/rodents/gerbils should be left earthbound.....

When it comes to tools, I always go by this principle.... Its pennies more to go first class! Since I started carving canoe paddles over a decade ago, I have collected a considerable number of spokeshaves in my pursuit of finding the perfect shave to shape a paddle blade with. Then I bought a Lee Valley flat bottom shave. I was so impressed with this quality tool that I got the rounded and concave shaves as well for work on the grip, throat, and shaft of my paddles. They are pure pleasure to use.

Up Creek With Paddle

So....Moose, how long does it take you to make paddles....and how often do you replace them? (Or are you in pursuit of the perfect paddle?)
