New 60+ lwt American Record

Post by Yankeerunner » February 3rd, 2013, 5:11 pm

This morning at the Queen City Icebreaker Ergatta in Manchester, NH Mike van Beuren rowed 6:49.6 to break Greg Brock's American Record for 60+ lightweights by seven seconds, winning the race outright that included all ergers age 30+ both Heavyweight and lightweight. Mike started out fast, eased to a 1:43+ second 500m, then did 1:42.6 for both the 3rd and 4th 500m splits for an exhibition of near even pacing. Pictured with Mike are Robert Lee (6:53.1 at age 68), Paul Geoghegan (56 lwt 3:26.9 PB in the earlier 1,000m), Fred Dickie (57, winner of the 1,000m at 3:20.7), Mike Shields (65+ 7:35.6), Adam Rosenthal (56, doubled at 3:23.5 in the 1,000m and 7:23.7 in the 2,000m) and Renegade Rick Bayko (the yankeerunner) (65 lwt in 7:19.2)

After a great morning of erging and spectating, which included an excellent and exciting 2-man 2-woman relay that came down to the final strokes, several of us retired to the famous Chez-Vachon restaurant in Manchester for a late breakfast and erg/rowing talk.

Great result, not sure where all the fast younger rowers were though, sleeping in ?

What sort of ratings were the lightwieights doing out of interest ?

Carl, I'm not sure what Mike rated early in the race or what his drag factor was (I THINK about 110, but hopefully he will 'weigh in' here), but I remember seeing on the splits screen that his last 500m in 1:42.6 was at 37spm and he said he was throwing everything he had into it. His earlier spm was much lower, maybe around 31 or so?

In contrast, my own lightweight race some 30 seconds slower than his was at 125df and ranged from a low of 35 spm for the first half to 38 spm at the end. Mike has much more power than I do (duh!).

Congratulations Mike. Must be that Queen City air...Nice job! That takes a lot of training to accomplish and it rewarded you.

Now that you're nicely tuned and warmed up for your run at CRASHBs, you can go after your own record just two weeks from now.

Look forward to seeing all of you at CRASHBs. Look me up...I'm in my last year as a 50-59 yr old heavyweight.

Thanks for all the hoop-la, Rick (yankeerunner)
I'd like to thank him and the whole crew of guys who get together at his (yankeerunner's) race in Newburyport... particularly Paul Geoghegan, who did a spectacular job coxing me... There's nothing like riding down through a frosty New England dawn and arriving to join a group of hard-driving partners-in-crime, everyone of whom had great performances themselves... Paul set a PB for 1k!

And, btw, I owe them one... they bought me a great victory breakfast B)

~ On to Boston :)

BTW: to answer the question on drag factor:
I'm erging all my meters at 125 df these days. That's up a little from last year.

Mystery sol-ved. It must have been Paul Geoghegan who was using a 110df.

Yup, that's me at 110 df. I'm lightweight in more ways than one. But I note that my rating was higher than anyone else in the 1k so I guess i make up for it in speed up and down the slide.

Must be a completely different feel to attend and participate in a regatta of around 75 competitors.
My first and only regatta had at least 1000 in Atlanta, or it certainly seemd like it.

Some of the data is somewhat interesting, seeing how the masters rowers approached their races.

Several got off to a somewhat faster start and slowing for the next two 500m. Most ended with a faster last 500m.
That describes the record setter Van Beuren, though his last 500m was not faster.
Several rowed pretty much even splits with a couple speeding at the end. Some got slower each 500m.
I don't think there was any overall trend, although I would not say that there were any clearly negative split rowers.

Quatroux:
Brief write-up:
I backed off and tapered for CRASH-B after the American Record. The result was that I felt ready for an even better time in Boston's 60-64 lwt race.
But... this was not to be... I got out on pace but didn't have either the strength or the resolve for the middle meters of the race.

I coasted in at 6:53.1 (about 14 sec ahead of 2nd place)
  Back to the drawing board :) I'm not in a quandry about this >>> there's plenty for me to work on...

Future:
Headed back to building for the on-the-water season.

= Mike

Mike, I wasn't surprised that you didn't row faster, for psychological rather than physical reasons. Having already not only beaten the record, but gone under 6:50, AND having little chance of making the leap to Bailey's WR (at least yet), AND having no one close enough to threaten winning the hammer, the incentive that you had in Manchester just wasn't there. The main goal was to win the race, and you did so in excellent fashion. Congratulations on a great 2013 erg season.

The bigger question, I think, is why did Paul and I row so much slower? :?
