Hi,
I'm new and I'm trying to make my 8 boat for head season. We're doing 6k tests. I got a 2:20 average split on my last one, and I'm 5'5''. I'm 160 lbs and need to get a bit faster. First how's this time and second what strategies can I use for the next one we have this Friday.. I forgot to say we are novices. Thanks

OK. The first item is that 5'5'' is quite short for rowing, but at 14, you may well gain a lot more height. Second is that 160# is awfully heavy for your height. If you have a lot of bulked up muscle that might be all right as far as your condition is concerned. However, coaches are not too happy with excess weight in a boat, even if it is a result of muscle built up from resistance work. Buffed up shoulder and chest muscles don't move boats. If my arithmetic is right, the 2:20 would be a 28:00.0 6k. Checking out your category in the rankings, there were only 3 entries for M LWT 13-14 in the 6k for this season, but checking out a couple of previous seasons shows that you are likely in the lowest 25%. Not too promising. I don't like to be discouraging, but I try to be realistic. It is still early to tell whether or not you can do well in rowing, since you may well gain a lot of height in the next few years. It is my hunch, that you could improve a lot by losing weight, especially if it is due to fat. Of course that is a long term proposition and would not help much for this seasonvinaychowdary wrote:13 yrs old, turning 14 next week. Male
