Great Product but Big Egos on here
Great Product but Big Egos on here
I love the product and going to continue to use it. But most on here was condescending right off the bat, and flat out tried to make me feel like a piece of sh*t. I didn't appreciate it and found my answers elsewhere past the C2 site itself; also the explanations I found on YouTube really helped. The use of physics is overkill especially for those not educated in regards to physics since I never took a physics class. But if you feel better about yourself posting about this that and the other thing and then putting other people down, well that is you but definitely not me.
I am a long term member/poster/moderator at another forum that is very popular and well known. I came here for 2 reasons:
Found it when I was shopping for my rower
Others at my forum recommended me to come here for answers.
I was not pleased on how I was treated by many (note I did not say all for some of you were nice and helpful) but most seem to have such a big ego that they don't leave much room for what people love to call the NOOB.
The point of this thread is to let you know that you don't exactly make people feel welcome. You have to understand when someone gets into something for the first time they will have questions that you at some point in your life didn't know the answers to either. Remember what it was like back then before you talk to them in a condescending manner. Remember that you once needed to learn this stuff. Also, note there are simpler ways to explain something and if they prefer more detailed info then go into the more detailed calculated explanations where numbers and terms and theories go into play.
In short, I appreciate the help that I did receive, but due to many members here, I seriously doubt I will be posting any further. I hope this post helps you understand where I am coming from and I seriously doubt I am alone on this.

Re: Great Product but Big Egos on here
The problem was a bit in your questions, they where not clear, you asked something, but what excactly?
The same with this post, what was helpfull, what was not? You don,t say it, so how would the forum know.
Another point, on facebook there are a lot more c2 users, mayby that is more your thing?

Re: Great Product but Big Egos on here
Well I could say something condescending like I don't understand your question because of your spelling but I won't do that. Ironically you are a big reason why I feel the way I feel. So this will be my last post and I will be gone. I am sure you won't care and that is fine. But you want an example. re-read my first paragraph, the example is in there. If you want me to reference old posts all you need to do is look at a few old posts I posted on and you will find yourself and others doing that very example I provided.hjs wrote:The problem was a bit in your questions, they where not clear, you asked something, but what excactly?
Again, as I clearly said in my original post, don't overwhelm the person with more jargon than they need. Simplify it, physics isn't needed to understand any of this. When I explain something in regards to computers to a client I don't say "Thanks to DNS the IP was able to be resolved to the domain name and that is why it worked." Instead I say something "Your DNS was the issue; DNS works much like the address book on a phone. Today most people don't remember phone numbers for they keep an address book that has a name associated to a phone number much like DNS that has a domain name for instance Google.com to an IP address. In short, DNS is the Internet's address book". How about something like that? The same with this post, what was helpfull, what was not?
Actually, I did!You don,t say it, so how would the forum know.
I checked FB, the info in there was eh. The best help was on YouTube and taking terms that I was still not quite clear on, Google them till I found an answer that made it clear, then read further to make sure I understood it correctly.Another point, on facebook there are a lot more c2 users, mayby that is more your thing?
If you want to discuss this further feel free to sign up for an account on Rosstraining.com and go to the forum and you will find me on there with the same handle as "speedy".

Finally something this simpleton gets I am a big reason, cause my answers where not simple enough and my writing is crap. You should have said stuff like that from the start.
The erg is very simple, the harder you pull the chain, the faster you go. Everything else is relative irrelevent hope this is simple enough. Low drag (setting) does not make you go faster.

I suspect the OP hasn't noticed that English isn't your first language and you don't use normal American idiomatic expressions. Your advice is always straight to the point if a little brutal, but then I'm no angel when it comes to telling it straight.hjs wrote:Finally something this simpleton gets I am a big reason, cause my answers where not simple enough and my writing is crap. Re: Great Product but Big Egos on here
Sorry you feel that way.
The Forum is a little tricky as you have people that have never been on an Erg to those that have used it for years AND competed competitively OTW (On The Water)
Also as pointed out they are from all round the world and English is not their first language, if you look through most of the posts on technical issues then there is the same few core posters and you have to go with the flow a little as they are imparting their years of knowledge and not charging for it, just look at the dates the people joined this forum.
My advice is not to get offended, pick out the useful stuff and enjoy your rowing.
If you want a really nice online community then try the RowPro software.

I know Doug, but I guess he should, Its pretty obvious. On the other hand I seldom see people being unfriendly or really harsh. And talked about this whole forum, which is simply very friendly to more or less everybody.Citroen wrote:I suspect the OP hasn't noticed that English isn't your first language and you don't use normal American idiomatic expressions. Quite true. The only moderation I do on here is deleting all the spammer's crud and fixing broken [quote] and [YouTube] tags. Since we got rid of Ranger there's nothing else to do.

Re: Great Product but Big Egos on here
I don't remember him ever really getting into it. At one point, on another thread, the OP of this one asked about what the drag numbers meant, suggesting that it might refer to meters. Well, there is no way to answering that without out a dab of physics. Nothing high powered here, just a matter of units. I was curious about it myself, so I checked it out in the monster pdf of the Oxford report on the physics of rowing. It turned out to be 10exp-6Nms^2. Nothing particularly useful on a practical scale, but it does mean that the drag numbers do have a real basis. Note that there is no knowledge of physics needed here - just a short web search. Any purpose to it? Well the question was asked, so I looked it up and found an answer.tortoise wrote:The next time hjs mentions physics, ban him.speedy wrote: . . . physics isn't needed to understand any of this.

Jargon is always a problem, like learning a new language. Try Chinese or Arabic or reading a diagnosis. I even had some difficulty reading Faulkner (The Bear) but it's marvellous all the same. How else do we learn?speedy wrote:The use of physics is overkill especially for those not educated in regards to physics since I never took a physics class.
Basic engineering terms like Watts, Power, Work, Length, Force, Energy, Inertia can be of help to understand how the erg works and so get the best out of it.
Beyond these, HR, CV, range, pace, bands, lactate, intensity, posture, sequence, catch, drag etc, are all jargon, specific to the topic.
Unavoidable. No doubt a horseman can name all the parts of his horse, saddle and whatever else he needs. How are your withers today? Just as Ahab could name all the parts of his ship, or Patton of his tanks. I wouldn't even know what they were talking about.

Hear, hear! Catechism now makes possible little epiphanies of understanding down the road. First we talk the talk and then we learn to walk. Jack
