Proper Technique
Proper Technique
Greetings:
I am new to rowing and would like insight regarding proper technique. I have not heard or read anything about proper foot involvement at the end of the Drive stroke and the beginning of the Recovery stroke.
The feet are strapped in and my question is: Do I keep my feet quiet or do I allow my drive stroke to reach a point where my feet (metatarsals) are pulling back against the restraining strap.
It feels that if my feet remain quiet my rhythm is smoother.
Any insight will be helpful.
Thanks,
Bumper

The idea is to use up all your momentum in the handle, so that as you reach the very end of your stroke there's none left to pull your toes up. A good drill for this is to row with your feet unstrapped - it gets very obvious if you're doing it wrong! In practice, and particularly during a race where anything goes, it's common to use the straps a little.
btw, generally speaking putting your posts in bold doesn't make them more likely to be answered

Thanks Paul,
That makes great sense and I will give the exercise a try.
Much appreciated
