Two shorter sessions or one longer session

Post by vsaksena » August 28th, 2008, 11:08 am

I have started rowing to reduce my weight and generally increase my fitness level. I have a lingering question: Is a longer session (10K) is better than two shorter sessions (7.5K each) one in the morning and the other one in the evening? Any inputs will be appreciated. :?:

Doing the 2 sessions will increase your average metabolic rate to a higher level for the day, and even if done at a similar pace level will be an additional 50% exercise, certainly a good thing for your purpose.

I would suggest at least a couple higher intensity sessions in the mix that will stimulate muscle growth, as increased lean mass is a good thing also, unless you are striving for lightweight potential.

You could do 2*5K with 90s rest. You should be able to row that at a quicker pace than a 10K. The 90 seconds rest gives you a chance to drink and drop your HR.

I remember a study that showed that 2 sessions performed with only a single meal between actually consummed more calories, but I'm afraid I remember neither the source, reliability or magnitude of the effect.

However, the consensus is that if you wish to maintain the fitness and weight loss, your program should be something you intend to keep up for the majority of your remaining life. Is 2 sessions a day really sustainable (with the added laundry and showering required)? Why not slowly increase your 10k or split with a short rest, it will be a lot less time consuming.

I know very little about you, so my comments may be wide of the mark, in which case I apologise.

Kind regards

Iain

Thanks for all your inputs, my current work schedule and home commitment will allow me to perform first set in the morning (before everybody gets up) and the second set in the evening (when everybody else is watching TV). Based upon the feedback on the board, I will try to continue two separate times for the rowing and let's see how it helps. I will post my experience in about 30 days.

I agree with what others said, but every now and then I would still do a long session. Its good to have some more endurance and it will make the 7.5K seem short.
