Music to row by--please share!

Post by voodoogirl » July 6th, 2006, 7:54 am

Hi Everyone

I find I row better to music, and I know I've read other posts here about what kind of music people row to---I was hoping we could share some of our favorite rowing music, because I know I like to change what I'm listening to pretty often....

Please share your favorite song lists! And happy rowing!

Oooh, good list there, voodoo girl!

I have a "workout" playlist on my iPod, and here are some of the things I have on that:

I have some songs on there from "Greatest Hits of the 1968," one of those Time-Life CD things:

Love Child by Diana Ross
Born to be Wild by Steppenwolf
Midnight Confessions by The Grass Roots
Valleri by the Monkees
Sittin' on the Dock of the Bay--Otis Redding
Sunshine of Your Live--Cream
Crimson and Clover
Think--Aretha Franklin

Theme song from Xena: Warrior Princess (yeah, yeah, I know :D ) by Joe LoDuca. It's great for a quick interval pull.

Then I have all of the songs on a CD called "Yoga Trance Dance," which has lots of driving drums and a faster rhythm.

I also have some traditional Celtic and Irish music songs that I like, all of which have a good beat for rowing.

After that, have a CD of Egyptian Drum music. Like the guy who reviewed it said, "my steering wheel hates me," because I beat the rhythms out on the steering wheel when I drive.

And then I have podcasts I listen to when I just want to do a regular workout, not a lot of intervals, etc.

I also tried to space the music out so I have a slower song in there every so often, just to gimme a break. B)

rowing playlist

Post by The Vulcan » August 3rd, 2006, 7:27 am

my current list:

500 miles - the Proclaimers (possibly the most motivating song ever written!)
I'm Still Standing - Elton John
I'm Free - Jon Secada
Bennie and the Jets - Elton John
Crocodile Rock - Elton John
Made in England - Elton John
Livin La Vida Loca - Ricky Martin (for the sprint to the finish line)
Where my Heart will Take me - Russell Watson (for cool down and stretching)

I have only rowed six times so far (37,013 meters) as I just got my rower a week ago; so I am not tired of the playlist yet. I am looking for additional "peppy" songs to rotate in. I mostly listen to classical music, which isn't all that great for workouts of any kind.

I am so glad to have found these posts. The only way I have made it through many rows (over 2 million meters of them) is due to the music. And, I needed some to update some of my playlists.

My favorite music for the over 26 spm rows is Britney Spears. Madonna is for the 24 spm rows and U2 for the 22 SPM rows.

For the 2K I have some music that was suggested last year on the forum ---Revenga is the song that pumped me through it, simply because I knew another rower was listening to it too.

At one point I was trying to learn Spanish while I rowed, but it was too hard to concentrate on the lesson.

Music to row, row, row by

    Post by floridajan » September 11th, 2006, 9:24 am

Great topic, VooDooGirl! For me anything Aretha is very motivating, especially "Think", "Who's Zoomin' Who", "Freeway of Love" and "Jimmy Lee". The B-52's hits "Love Shack" and "Roam" are excellent too...but my all time favorite wake-me-from-the-dead song is "You Get What You Give" by The New Radicals.

I think the theme song for Ducks In A Row (If we don't already have one; I'm a new duck so I don't know) should be "Shake Your Tail Feathers" by Ray Charles.

I went in the opposite direction last week, and created a playlist of mellow music, mostly Eluvium and Jim Brickman. I rowed for 45 minutes with my eyes closed, visualizing myself out on the water alone. It was great, I felt good afterwards and I actually rowed faster when I wasn't looking at the monitor. I added a couple of Nestor Torres (latin jazz flute player) for the last ten minutes when my energy was flagging though.

How do you get the beats per minute? I think someone posted about this on the old forum and I remember glancing at it but I didn't get a chance to really read it.
It is hard enough at any time being shut up in the dark with nothing to do; but the prospect of being a human sacrifice at the end of it just made the whole situation incomparably worse.

I use the freeware ltjBPM on my Mac. It's manual, but quick and easy: I fire up a song in iTunes, then tap a key to the beat in ltjBPM. When I'm satisfied my count is fairly accurate, ltjBPM feeds it directly into iTunes.

I'm sure there are lots of freeware and shareware options for the PC—try Googling "bpm counter." There are even a few automated counters, but last I heard the consumer-level options were somewhat limited in application (they might measure techno accurately, but get confused by genres that tend to be more rhythmically subtle or complex).

On Itunes, Nike has pre-arranged playlists at a variety of beats per minute. Obviously, you can't choose your own songs though.

I usuallly like a very heavy "grind", typical of Stone Temple Pilots and Soundgarden, although my private, at home, taste runs toward classical and piano jazz. Also, the older British stuff makes rowing refererences, and I often wonder if they are deliberate. Anyway, my list, which in various forms has served me well for 5 to 10 years:

    Come Together, The Beatles
Back In The U.S.S.R., The Beatles
Everybody's Got Something To Hide Except Me And My Monkey, The Beatles
    Pure Love, Crystal Waters
    Love Removal Machine, The Cult
    Wild Flower, The Cult
    Dirty White Boy, Foreigner
I'll Get Even With You, Foreigner
Rev On The Red Line, Foreigner
    Party Train, The Gap Band
Birth, School, Work, Death, The Godfathers
Thirty Days In The Hole, Humble Pie
Skating Away (On The Thin Ice Of The New Day), Jethro Tull
    Crosstown Traffic, Jimi Hendrix
    Dolly Dagger, Jimi Hendrix
    Ezy Ryder, Jimi Hendrix
    Words, Missing Persons
    Mental Hopscotch, Missing Persons
    Walking In L.A., Missing Persons
Ten Seconds to Love, Mˆtley Cr¸e
    Girls, Girls, Girls, Mˆtley Cr¸e
    Wild Side, Mˆtley Cr¸e
    Kickstart My Heart, Mˆtley Cr¸e
Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.), Mˆtley Cr¸e

Since this is the women's forum and people are looking for music, I have been getting into Sleater-Kinney. At the time, I thought a lot of 90s music was derivative, but now looking back, I have better perspective. Sleater-Kinney grew out of the riot grrl movement of the early 90s; sort of feminist-lesbian post punk. Cranking guitars, great beat, and unbridled, wailing vocals (ok, she is over the top in a good way a lot of the time). Here is a rave review of their last album:
