I NEED HELP!!!

Post by xeno » May 11th, 2006, 7:27 pm

Thanks to the fact that my children are now in the pubic school system, I am meeting more people/parents.

I am lucky to have met RON a dad of two little girls.

He is now rowing at the Iron Oarsman and asked me if I would like to have some help marketing.

"Y E S" I exclaimed. I know how to row a boat and pull on a chain and make other do the same. Marketing however.... I am below the totem pole.

So here is my cry for help to our brains on the FORUM.

We are planning to run press releases consistantly from now on.

I would love to hear from you all why rowing is good for earthlings.

Rowing in winter, fall, summer, spring. For mother's day, Valentine's day etc.

I thank you all very much for your future imput.

I know that we will find a few funny ones that will make us laugh and other more serious ones. Nonetheless chances are we might not have thought of it.

So thank you in advance!!!!!

All the best,

I've posted my little story before, so please forgive me if you've heard it before. You can ignore me (just like my seven year old does :) )

In January I had heart palpitations and shortness of breath. At the time, I was 5.8", 325 pounds and 41 years old. The men on one side of my family have a history of short lives due to heart attacks, so I was fairly concerned.

I ended up at a cardiologist's where I did a treadmill stress test and found out that I was in decent condition for a man 45 years older than myself. It turned out that I didn't have heart disease, but the doctor pointed out that you never see a 70+ year old man in my condition and that if I didn't do something, I wouldn't live a whole lot longer and that my health would be very bad at the end of my life. He said that people in my condition end up ruinng their knees, so they can't exercise like they need to, that they end up with diabetes and die from a stroke or something else fun like that. He said I might live to see sixty but he doubted much longer than that.

Because I couldn't run in the condition I was in, the doctor sent me to the c2 website. I've been rowing since February 26 and I'm down about 40 pounds and feel better than I have in a long, long time. I'm planning to lose another 100+ pounds and have a long life with my family.

I feel like I will be able to stay motivated to make this a lifestyle change. I don't have to feel embarrassed by huffing and puffing in a gym or getting heckled by teenagers as I try to run in my neighborhood. The camaradere of the c2 community and the opportunity to compare my performance with others and my previous performance also gives me a reason to get on the rower other than just "I have to do it"

I am new to erging, 4 month's, 650,000m, -10lbs.
Erging is great, online competition/training is tons of fun, extremely efficient and low impact excercise, great weight loss activity with minimal amount of time per day. This has all the ingredients for a very-very successful excercise craze, like spinning, only better..

My 2 cents would be: first: articulate where you want to go with your business.. Are you attempting to primarily be a source of expert coaching for local rowing clubs, or are you going after people like me that just want to be fit, are probably never going to row on water, and would like to have a competitive outlet? Are you a serious technique/training studio first, or a broader cardiovascular fitness using erg's place where anyone can come in?

If it's the former, you know a lot better than me how to build a reputation as the person to go to for serious, successful coaching..

If it's the latter, the article that you posted recently from that female reporter was great, perhaps more things like that? What does the front of your location look like? Is it inviting, bright colors, projects a "come on in" feel? What is your neighborhood like, adequate parking, do you have open house's, regatta's, events that are designed to get people to see that your location has a lot of traffic?

My 2 cents, best of luck to you!

Marketing to students

Post by SlugButt » May 12th, 2006, 1:02 pm

It seems that recruiting by college coaches continues to be a significant factor for high school students. I wonder if parents and high school students alike might be excited by the possibility of being coached by an olympic gold medalist, and if they might consider it to be an possible asset in applying to or getting recruited by rowing colleges/universities.
