Wanted to do a 2000M time trial but guess the evaluation of my improvement since the last attempt (7:31) was a bit ambitous. Was averaging 1:49/500 and completely ran out of gas with 600M to go so turned the session into intervals 1400M at 1:49/500 800M at 1:47 500M at 1:41 and 2X 100M at 18, 17.4 (just for fun)

OOPs meant to put this under Workout of the day. Anyway, after years of running and being able to pace myself quite well. I am having to relearn how to Pace for the erg. This was my third attempt at a 2000 and second failed one. I guess I really have to work on holding back the first 1000M till I get it figured out

Next time, focus on pacing yourself better as you said.

If you run into difficulty, just back off, even if it's a lot, and then pick it back up when you're feeling better.

You might try rowing dead even splits at your current PB pace to the last 500 meters, and then hammer it to the finish.

Then do the same thing the next time.

I prefer using the "projected pace" display for time trials, as it gives you a more realistic projection of your time through the effort.

Well I could have done a pb but was not prepared to bury myself for a miserable 2 or 3 seconds. I must hasten to say I've only tried once before and did a lowly 7.50 so big improvements were expected - maybe 6 to 10 sec. Off I went and into 1:50 mode for 1:51.5 1st split. Seemed quite easy. Second split struggling with 1:57.2 and at 1300 could barely manage 2:00 and packed although my HR was only 155. (I can sustain 160 on the bike for >20min) My head went
At cycling I can judge starts and pace very accurately, but I obviously got it totally wrong here. The percieved effort was so different. Does this come with experience or do you guys just watch the splits and ignore how you feel?
Blowing up on a 2k PB attempt is a pleasure that all, or most, of us have enjoyed at one time or another. I would consider focusing on the 5k for a little while, working up to taking a crack at a 5k PB (say around sub20 or so). The 5k will help your focus on pacing and race strategy, build endurance and toughness, and may make the 2k seem short the next time you try to lay one down.

Turbocog,

That is a coincidence. Sounds like we both had a sufferfest today. Oh Well chalk it up to experience.

I can say without a doubt that I have never felt so much physical pain/distress as I have in both attempts that I blew up in. I have never felt that in any running race of any distance, ever. I have never quit in a running race either. Maybe slowed but never quit. In these two attempts, I don't feel like I could have slowed and kept going. Completely spent.

John, I will try your strategy of going out at the last PB then give it all last 500 but I like Michaelb's suggestion of doing some 5K's first, they are not nearly as painful.

RtR:
What were your splits for the 7:31 2K on your previous 2K ? The avg is only 1:53/500m. Try holding that pace for 1000 m intervals. If you feel pretty good, try that pace for the PB attempt, and then see if you can crank it up smoothly the last 250 m. If you're on the mark at 1750 m, you'll be excited to be at your previous pace, and have some adrenaline to push your time down.

Then try it again sometime later (in the day, in the week) at 1:52. The small differences are significant, since you are right on the edge of your limits. Be a touch under, and you are fresh at the end. Be a touch over, and you can't make the entire 2K, just as you experienced.

LJ
