When I was almost to the boat house, I saw three Japanese rowers who looked a bit lost to me. I showed them the paper, to which I had added an introduction:

Welcome to the Honolulu Boat Club.

ホノルルのボートクラブへの歓迎。

Thank you for rowing with us on the water today.

水に私達との今日漕艇をありがとう。

We apologize for not speaking Japanese

私達は話さない日本語のために謝る

On the other side of this page are our basic coxing instructions.

このページの反対側に私達の基本的なcoxing 指示の翻訳はある。

I used a computer translator on the Internet, so these translations will probably make you laugh!

私はインターネットのコンピュータ訳者を使用した、 そう翻訳はおそらく笑いを作る!

(Here are the results of back-translating the Japanese:
ここに上記の日本語を翻訳した結果は英語にある。

Welcome to the Honolulu boat club.
In water our present rowing thank you.
We apologize because of Japanese you do not speak
There is translation of our basic coxing indications on opposite side of this page.
I used the computer translator of Internet, so as for translation laughing is perhaps made!

But they were bewlidered and finally made it known that they were single scullers only.

At the boat house, I found the ones who had been sent to row, plus four of our regulars. When I showed my script to one of them, she said, "Oh, they can speak English." Turns out, the three rowers and the cox couldn't, but their coach had come along, and he could, a bit.

So we made two 4K runs, one with our cox and one with theirs. On the first run, they sat #5, #6 and #7. With just stern four (those three plus our stroke) rowing, our 8 lept out of the water as it had never done before. I sure was nice to row with people who know what they are doing and who are young and strong (even if they are lightweights).

We ended the day by introducing them to shave ice. A good time was had by all.
