Erging without using legs

Post by PaulBrown71 » April 13th, 2023, 4:19 pm

Hello, this is my first post to this forum. I have been told by my doctor in order to heal my hip from an injury to not do anything that impacts my right leg, including erging.

I know that I can erg by putting my feet on the ground as opposed to on the footboards, but I was wondering if there are any accessories I can use with my concept 2 D to make this feel more intentional; maybe something that helps mimic the ski erg motion. Any suggestions on getting a good workout while being mindful of this injury would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Get a skateboard. Place your damaged foot on that and row with your other leg.
  • Or replace your grounded Model D with one on a pair of slides (you don't move on slides the ergo moves under you).
  • Or replace your regular Model D with a dynamic rowerg (same effect as a regular Model D on slides).

If you buy or have access to a Ski Erg, you can do it sitting on a chair.

I don't have a leg injury, but I don't bend my legs appreciably when I Ski. That may or may not suit you.

Edit: You need to avoid hip flexion. So you need to do arms only. Hip hinge would not work for you.

Ask your doctor for an approved list of exercises and stick to it. Or find a new doctor.

Either the doctor knows what he'd doing based on the specifics of your injury, or he doesn't. Google seems to think most hip injuries benefit from work/therapy to heal quickly and fully. If your hip needs something else have your doctor explain it. Worse case is you do what's right for 99% of hip problem but is exactly the wrong thing for your injury. Your doctor may have a valid reason to tell you do to nothing.

Wouldn't recommend the Erg, sounds like a stationary bike would be better after an initial period to heal. No load just range of motion. Backwards and forwards.

Surely you cannot stop using your right leg completely.
