ULTRA(100km) training help

Post by Ultrabro » May 10th, 2020, 8:06 am

Hello Everyone

I'm new to the board, and even tho i'm no pro rower, I macined about 3500 km on the rower and skierg, which i both own. Now the question is relatively simple, how much time do i need to train for a Ultra on the Skierg, how much time every training, what level of volume do i need to accumulate 2 weeks before the Ultra attempt. I give you a bit of me: it's now about 2 years i don't train competitively like i used to do before. Now i'm of course a bit (40 kg) overweight, and in the last months I started training again, reaching now a bout 40 minutes per day (around 6-10 km 5 times a week). Some days i row 25 km but of course i don't do sprints.

I read somewhere that in order to row/ski and ultra I should build up to 9 hours per week in the 6 weeks prior to the attempt. Anyone care to give some hints? :D

I can't give skierg advice as I don't use it, but for a rower it is a bit subjective as we are all different.

I built up to it every week doing longer and longer distances and it took me about 12 weeks to do a 100k from when I was comfortably doing 25k.

I made the mistake of going further and further every week after I got past 65k, which is roughly all you need to do to be able to contemplate a 100k. I don't think you need to be doing nine hours a week, as, unless you're able to recover quickly enough, it will subtly undermine your progress.

When you get past circa 65k I found there was more of a settled feeling of uncomfort and it didn't feel quite as bad. I believe that's due to your brain accepting that it's happening and eventually it starts to work with you (to some extent) rather than against you.

Your mindset and your acceptance that it will be very uncomfortable at times, and just uncomfortable for most of it, is what is more important than doing a massive amount of hours training.

Best of luck, and when are you planning on doing it?
