Weight range for boats

No, ergs don't yet float, but some of us do, and here's where you get to discuss that other form of rowing.

Weight range for boats

Post by Paterson24 » September 19th, 2012, 11:20 pm

Would it be ok for a 70kg rower to use a boat thats suitable for a 80 to 90kg rower?

Ok, but not optimal. The boat will float a bit higher, so the height of the oars will be a bit off. The boat may also feel a bit tipper since the center of gravity will be higher.

Better than the alternative of being too big for a small boat.
PBs: 2k 6:09.0 (2020), 6k 19:38.9 (2020), 10k 33:55.5 (2019), 60' 17,014m (2018), HM 1:13:27.5 (2019)

Old PBs: LP 1:09.9 (~2010), 100m 16.1 (~2010), 500m 1:26.7 (~2010), 1k 3:07.0 (~2010)

Hmmm. I am a 115kg rower and have to row a 90kg single at my club.

Not ideal. I suppose I'll have to buy my own boat.

Unless you are at a certain level of competition it is not going to be a big deal.

However it will make a difference in your speed/rowing. Being too heavy for a boat results in more of the boat being in the water which increases the drag on the boat which slows you down. It also decreases the clearance your rigger has from the water, which can be a big pain in rough weather.
