5000m - is this a good time for a beginner rower?

Post by AdrianK » March 19th, 2016, 11:46 am

Hello everyone,

I'm totally new to rowing so figured might as well register and say hello :)

Yesterday I have completed my only 5th session on 5000m (never done any rowing before) and wondering if my time is any good for a complete beginner?

Here is my time and individual splits:

First session was 19:30 if I remember correctly, then 18:58, 18:55, 18:46 and yesterday 18:42 with stats as above.

What do you guys think?

A 10W stroke is unusual for a beginner, well done. Keep trying.
08-1940, 183cm, 83kg.
2024: stroke 5.5W-min@20-21. ½k 190W, 1k 145W, 2k 120W. Using Wods 4-5days/week. Fading fast.

Color me envious!
Age: 54 Weight: 91.5kg/202lbs Height: 174cm/5' 8.5" Fitness level: jog 5 miles daily and swim 30 minutes almost daily; I'd say fit but with a persistent beer gut.

You will probably get some comments regarding the pacing from the purists.
Raw strength and guts saved the day.
Good power, rel. Low spm shows potential
You can always check on the c2 side and compare yours with similar build/sex/age to know where you stand.

Different tactics would probably lower the time by another 20 s at same fitness level.
TechnIque more so

Very nice, good base to work from. Focus on meters with a strong stroke mostly (low rate). Rowing is a power endurance sport. So endurance and a strong stroke are both important.

You don't say anything about age, gender, weight, height, general condition, and previous athletic experience. Your time is not bad for a beginner in any category, but would be fantastic in some.
