Issues with various monitors (PM1/2/3)

Post by bloomp » March 25th, 2010, 10:29 am

I have recently begun coaching at a local high school, and have taken it upon myself to at least somewhat upgrade their ergs. They currently have 9 ergometers - 3 Model B's, 4 model C's and 2 model D's. Of these, only 4 work consistently.

We have 3 PM1s, one on each model B, two have issues. One does not have fully functional buttons. I am wary of disassembling it, but am wondering if the connection is just dirty or something. Another has a very dark screen, but still displays an accurate pace.

We have 3 PM2s, one on each model C. One is missing the pickup (I think that's the right term), that wires into the PM from the flywheel. Another is completely shattered (need to buy a new one :( ). The third is very inaccurate - sometimes it displays the correct pace, sometimes it's showing one hundred something SPM and completely incorrect paces.

All of the PM3s work fine. Two on D's and one on a C.

If you have any suggestions about how to fix the problems I have listed, please let me know. If you have extra monitors (or ergs) laying around - let me know even faster! When you have fifty kids needing to learn to row or increase fitness in the offseason, it's hard to cycle them all through on the ergs. And who knows what they're really doing if we send them running. Keep them on the pain machine I say

LCD displays get dark over time often. The only fix is to replace them. Find a guy who is handy with electronics :D You can take the IC board and clean it is distilled water and then dry it in something like a vegetable dehyrator. You can do that with the whole thing for that matter. But you need to make sure that immediately after the rinse you put the thing in the dryer to prevent corrosion and ensure the thing is really dry. It could be in general the inside is corroded. Do they show evidence of battery leakage? If so this quite often makes the beyond repair vs buying a used one.

I see PM2s on ebay all the time.

Hi I'm repairing all of the above versions but I am in New Zealand so probably not alot of help to you.

The most common problem with the PM2's is battery corrosion on the board. Because the batteries are mounted directly in contact with the board any leakage results in a board failure in the power supply area. They can be quite hard to repair and I have about a 50% success rate in getting them fully operational again. Use only quality Alkaline, Lithium or I use Ni-Mh recharagables in mine. The PM2 is a good monitor if you don't want to row online. The last rev 2.3 board (version can be seen printed on the board in the battery compartment) is very nice with gold plating and this is a very reliable monitor.

The PM1 reminds me of an old calculator when you pull it appart. Personally I think these are pretty limited (no HR input) and I don't bother to repair them.

PM3's and PM4's are okay but the post August 2008 datecode version (shown under Product ID) is far better in terms of reliability.I would avoid buying the earlier version second hand if you can.

As with all the monitors keep them mounted up high as if and when someone lets go of the handle it will toast the monitor.

For us, I'm afraid I don't have the option of ignoring the PM1s, we just need the machines. I will find my serial cable at home and update all the PM3/4 we have. And because anyone in the school gym classes has access to the room the ergs are in, it's hard to keep them safe - but I plan on putting the monitors all the way back up next to the cage.

I'm going to look around for more monitors. Or ergs. For decent prices.

As you keep an eye out for ergs, watch Craig's List, FreeCycle and other local sources.

Many high schools have foundations that provide additional support for students and activities. If there is a 501(c)(3)-qualified foundation associated with the school you coach at, you may be able to arrange to have donations of ergs made to the foundation (which will then give the donor a tax exemption), based on the value of the donation. Consult with the foundation on how they may be able to help you get ergs funded or donated for your program.

Check with local gyms that may be ready to upgrade their equipment. You may want to suggest that they consider donating the ergs to your program--especially if there is a foundation asssociated with your school.

Best wishes!

Alissa

It's a stock USB-A to USB-B cable that you need. Pull the one from the back of your printer or scanner if you can't find your C2 supplied one.

Citroen - thank you, I have never bothered looking at that. That'll be easy to use.

Alissa - there is indeed an organization that people could donate to, so I'll use that when I'm trying to convince people to give things away! I've never checked either FreeCycle or Craigslist, but I'll do that now.

Thank you Cyclist2 for the PM2!
