I had my first (and I daresay, only) go at a half marathon today.

My target was 1:49/500m pace, for around 1.16:30 (accounting for a little sprint at the end). My plan was gentle negative splitting all the way to the end. This went to plan, for the most part, but then as the finish line approached, I had Jo Andre's time of around 1.16:15 in my head so I pulled out all the stops for the final 3k. Really, really hard, but weirdly, the worst bit was around the hour. I had a hard time not HDing at the hour point, but actually felt a little light-headed after that and almost HDed around 1.03:00.

Anyway, very pleased with the result of 1.16:06.5. It's without a doubt the hardest row I've ever done. My right buttock has cramped, my traps are totally fried and I'm kaput.

Many erger here think so, I guess it's the feeling "no matter how hard I row, I have to do exactly XX minutes" vs. "at least I don't have to row as long when I row a bit harder" :)
I think for me, it's how many metres comes off the total when I look away, and then look back at the monitor: it feels like a bigger amount of progress. I just can't seem to translate that to metres increasing as the primary focus is too much on time slowly reducing. I've never used the tactic, the harder I row the faster it will be over.

I'm wondering if it's just a matter of getting used to it, as the vast majority of my sessions are for a specific distance.

I’d say it’s a case of getting used to it Stu. I was every much in the same position, however now, having a larger proportion of my training being a certain time rather than distance, I now find it less daunting watching the time go down.

SkiErg 5k.

Intended just as a training piece. On/off changes every 500m. Pace targets 2:04 on/2:10 off. Realised that I'd never done a proper 5k on the SkiErg, so put the hammer down at the end.

20:55.6 5,000m 2:05.5 177 908 34

2:04.0 500m 2:04.0 184 931 30
2:09.6 1,000m 2:09.6 161 853 29
2:04.1 1,500m 2:04.1 183 930 33
2:08.7 2,000m 2:08.7 164 865 33
2:04.0 2,500m 2:04.0 184 931 36
2:08.5 3,000m 2:08.5 165 867 34
2:03.7 3,500m 2:03.7 185 936 37
2:09.1 4,000m 2:09.1 163 859 36
2:02.8 4,500m 2:02.8 189 950 39
2:01.2 5,000m 2:01.2 197 976 40

Image

The stroke rate increase through the piece shows just how much strength and muscular endurance I don't have yet, but this gives me a line in the sand for the 5k in the Tour de SkiErg for February.

Nice one, you will improve rapidly if you haven’t done much longer work. I do like the on/off format, gives a short term goal. I use larger differences between on/off though. More 10 seconds.

For a full 5k, you better aim for a much flatter pace. Think you are good for a 2.03/4

Whoop whoop...great stuff Max 👏👏

I've only done one 5k Ski and it was nowhere near this. Sadly we're not gym members now so no skiing for me. But I am keen to try roller skiing outside at some point when restrictions lift.🎿

Time to obliterate some low hanging fruit with a 6k today. Previous 6k was on December 21st:

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M
26:11.5 6,000m 2:10.9 156 836 21 154

First goal today was to beat 2:03.4 pace, which I did 2 weeks ago on a 5k TT
Second goal was to go for a 24:30.

Time Meters Pace Watts Cal/Hr S/M
24:20.8 6,000m 2:01.7 194 967 24 158
6:15.0 1,500m 2:05.0 179 916 24 142

5:51.4 6,000m 1:57.1 218 1049 25 176

Happy with the outcome, and it moved me from the 25th to the 50th % in the rankings

Well done Lou,

You'll be sub-24' next time I'm sure.

You're a good size for this, and as your fitness continues to improve, this will soon become just a paddle for you.

Nice work.
