Image Another episode... more cowbell !!

This bunny trail of the mind started with an article in the local paper, The Denver Post, a day or so ago. See link at bottom of page for the article, if you're interested.

Many of our Colorado mountain towns are hoping that the Pro Cycling Challenge will provide a much needed economic boost - not just for this year, but for seasons to come. Cities and towns made bids to be one of the stops on the Pro Cycling Tour. Salida is a mountain town that was chosen as the start of Day 1. It's a pretty small town, and raising the money to get the "goodies" to impress the racers, the spectators, probably was tough. Given that, one of the things they purchased with their $70 K was 4,000 cowbells. And so the bunny trail began as I pondered the impact of 4,000 cowbells along a race route... or at a finish line...

Image or Image

Behold the cowbells ... both old and new! These clanky noisemakers are viewed as totally obnoxious by some - and absolutely essential by others. All I know is that there's nothing like a particularly animated (meaning lively in this case) volunteer who is cheering you on with a NOISY cowbell - maybe it's up a steep hill, maybe it's to the finish line - either way, can't help but grin because it DOES help you get past that obstacle. Some volunteers are working as hard as the participants!! While most of us haven't gone quite that route with our rowing, I could see that there's a need for more cowbell here and there when we need to have some extra umpfh during a rowing session. So here's to more cowbell in your day!!!

and, here's a link to the video bid that the City of Golden put in (I worked in Golden for many years, bike the hills, and am a volunteer with the cycling events). You have to get past some of the brazen (and essential) advertising - but it's worth a look. Golden won the bid for the host city of the final stage.

Not to start you down another bunny trail of the mind, K2, but this was the first thing I thought of when you brought up the cowbells (maybe preview before letting kids view - it was a Saturday Night Live skit.)

Welcome to the team, Jodi! Great to have you!!!

K2: Ross 12,016 m .... since you've been incorporating CrossFit plus rowing, have you seen an increase in amount of meters you're able to row in a given time period?

Great question - there is a short answer: YES. I can now chart my average pace over the past year since I started rowing and the greatest increase ocurred since January when I started Cross-fit seriously. Overall average has improved by about 5 sec/500meters. But when I intentionally race, my improvement is closer to 10sec/500 meters. I also notice that when I "just row", the pace I default to is much faster than before (was around 2:12 - now it's about 2:05). I've also trimmed a good 12 seconds off my 500 meter sprint. But...don't get too excited. I've never rowed a sub 7 2k and I'm still a ways from that. For me, it was huge victory to get a sub 8 2k and I'm now around a 7:30. I wish I could be like Baz or Ron, but I'm too old for that. Besides...I could never haul 10 tons of gravel in one day! Perhaps I should try, would you believe, vegemite?

Age is only a statutory requirement, we are all required to have one, but it is how you feel that counts most...

Vegemite, never without it, but I also found the ‘power breather’ helped and I’m about to do another round of it. It worked a treat previously and must say I am well off my pace from earlier in the year. About 4-5 kgs heavier with the focus on weight lifting... In fact I’m going to use the upcoming challenge to up the ante on rowing (well, that’s the plan).

Must say I enjoyed moving the gravel, did have some help, but it was a good change to the usual regime of exercise, which is what cross-fit is about in some ways!

Had the last two days off from training, back tomorrow, but I’ll drink a toast to the Lunies tonight (Mad Brewers Stout!). Beer O’clock here in Sydney on Friday afternoon. Good weekend to all!

Cheers, BBB

Alas, I won't be on the honor board roster for this year's Dog Days of Summmrr Challenge (although there have been dog days every day here!). Rats.
