Kona shared,
"...There are many Winstons in the world, yet the one that I'll bet most of us think about is Winston Churchill. And Winston, great orator that he was, gave one of his most famous speeches at Harrow's School in Britain. The portion of the speech that's most quoted is "Never give in, never give in, never, never, never, never - in nothing, great or small, large or petty - never give in except to the convictions of honor and good sense. Never yield to force. Never yield to the apparently overwhelming might of the enemy." So when reindeer are tiring in this long flight/challenge season, Karyn's Winston will be there to help remind us to stay the course....just like she reminds her students...."

Little does Kona know, but the motto hanging on the wall in my classroom is"Winners never quit and quitters never win". I guess maybe Winston is the right name for my reindeer.

Karyn/Winston

Too bad I didn't wait one more reindeer though. Thirteen is my favorite number.

All In A Day's ERG: Team Progress Thru 12.05.10

Lots of reindeer chatter in the stables this morning as our intrepid flyers reported out on their flight to Holland. No windmills, skaters or bicyclists were harmed during takeoffs and landings. The Flying Five (Dancer/Baz, Vixen/Minnie, Comet/Will, Cupid/AJ and Blitzen/Ron) unanimously agreed that more flying reindeer are needed before Christmas Eve. Delivering all those new Concept2s to the Dutchies....whew....lot of work. Besides, the five need others to talk reindeer strategy with....I mean, you can't just go into work today and say "hey, got my antler lights and flew to Holland yesterday.." with just anyone. Probably better to say that you're part of an amazing virtual rowing team and having more fun and motivation to exercise in December than you ever thought possible....and, btw, ANYONE can join in....don't have to wait until the challenge is over... :D Shameless advertising....

ImageImageImage Wowzer, mates! Here we are on the brink of crossing a big milestone....the FIFTY million team meter mark....so row those Holiday Challenge meters....by now you know they are extra special. Every rower is extending their row times by some significant percentages as those antlers (and antler lights) beckon! Great rowing by all !

Season meters as of 219/365 = 49,915,155 m

Total meters on the day = 568,689 m

Oars in space (participation) = 31 percent

MILESTONES...Bragging Rights...Celebrations:

4.3 MM Will S
3.2 MM AJ
1.7 MM Rodrigo-go-go
1.7 MM Jerry
900 K Angelo

ONE Million Meter Watch: the field is getting more crowded....love it!

Ross with (57,915 m) to go!

Angelo with (72,844 m) to go!

Mike M with (124,844 m) to go!

Ron with (129,871 m) to go!

Not to be outdone by California mooning, the Aussies were in fine form yesterday....Mega-moons from Angelo, and an almost full moon by Bazz. Elsewhere in our rowing universe, we have four half moons.

Image Will S with a great update of 111,000 m earns some megamoons
Image Angelo puts the Aussies on the front of the pack with 100,767 m to upload
ImageImage Baz earns almost a full moon with 40,000 m

macbruce1 wrote:You are so right K2 :!: Being part of this team is fun. This weekend the team even won high praise from a non-member. Lyn, my wife, said how great it was to see me so enthusiastic. She saw how down I was when I had to give up running and she said she hasn't seen me this exicted about an athletic endeavor since I fulfilled my lifelong dream of qualifying for, and running the Boston Marathon.

If the Luna-Tics were a medicine, I would ask my doctor for a presciption :D

Thank you Team
Blitzen/Ron
which year did you run boston...i'm doing my 9th this year...all as a charity runner, still dreaming of doing a bq....

Wowzer .... the team reindeer alert sirens are at full blast!! There's a clatter of hooves out at the stable as another teammate rushes in to free up another reindeer.....and it's Jangle....claimed by Rick !

Congratulations, Rick, on achieving the 100K level of the Holiday Challenge!

Well I guess the marvelous herd that you so adroitly cheered to Polar heights will have to get by with rattling our antlers, stamping our hooves, and twinkling our lights impatiently until your return.

I ran Boston in 2005. My starting # was 10695 and it took about 15 minutes to get to the start line after the gun went off. I finished 7862. Being there was some experience, especially the Wellsley "Scream Tunnel". It was the experience of a life time, but I would'nt try it again, even if I can eventually go back to running. I don't do well in crowds-after a while I begin to have panic attacks :?

I guess being part of the on line rowing community is the best for me. I get to interact with interesting people from all around the world and no fear of crowds :!:

Ron
i ran that year....i was wayyyyyyyy behind you.....i envy your speed....the crowds do get overwelming....being on a virtual team is nice...and....imho...the luna-tics are the best.....btw..where do you live...are from around boston?????
