... and with boston cmng up in less than a, gulp, month, my erging/rowing won't be increasing ...barbara
I'm just so proud to know someone who qualified for the Boston marathon. Maybe, on the 3rd Monday of April, you'd like to review why you have to run an extra mile+ after Heartbreak Hill ... I thought this was interesting, and I'm sure I can seque back to rowing or space ... :) :

Why the marathon is called the marathon, and why it is 26.2 miles.
Phillippides was one of the men who battled the Persians at Marathon in Greece, in 490 BC. When the battle was won, he ran 25 miles from Marathon to Athens to report the victory. Upon arrival, he was so exhausted that he collapsed and died. When the modern Olympic Games were inaugurated in Greece in 1896, the legend of Phillippides was revived by a 24.85 mile run from Marathon Bridge to Olympic stadium in Athens.

So why is a marathon 26.2 miles? The 1908 Olympics were held in London, but because the royal family wanted the marathon’s finish line to be in front of the royal viewing box, the course was lengthened to 26.2 miles! After years of heated discussion, 26.2 miles was established at the 1924 Olympics in Paris as the official marathon distance.

Chris (I may be a Londoner, but don't hold that against me!)

... and, yes Gina, there are a lot of view of these team pages ... now, that gives one pause! (BTW, what means 500m, 1k, paddler, etc.?)

About the Paddler, 500 m, 1K, 2K, 6K Avatars

Post by Kona2 » March 28th, 2008, 10:23 am

What the Paddler, 500 M, 1K, 2K, 5K, 6K, 10 K Etc Avatars Mean
When a forum user makes/posts a certain number of replies or postings, the forum user becomes eligible for Concept2 avatars that reflect the number of postings that individual has contributed. If you look at your user name when you make a posting in the forum, you'll see paddler, 500 m, etc and then a number of posts you've contributed. Some of you already have an avatar that you use, so you would have to override your avatar in favor of the concept2 avatar if you wished to use the avatar representing your number of posts. I also don't know whether these are lifetime postings or each year postings. Might be a good Dena question.

As near as I can figure out:

Postings 1 - 50 = paddler

51 - 100 = 500 m

101 - 200 = 1 k

200 - ? = 2 k

And I don't know the rest because I have only reached 2K

What I have not been able to access are the concept2 avatars. I have requested help from Concept2 on this 3 times, and am not communicating my request well since I still cannot find where these avatars are located! My requests are answered with "here's how you upload an avatar." I think I can upload an avatar once I have the jpg or gif to upload!

Anyone know the answer to this one?

Yes, he does that to me, also!

AJ's increasing distance is the result of that much discussed heart monitor. He's going further now that he's drilled back the pace and is staying within his heart-happy range ... and not seeming about to explode. Being able to breathe beyond gasps is having a positive effect.

Not to be outdone, I selected a HM ... and hit the wall with 6K left to go. I did limp along to the bitter end, but it made me reconsider my brunch choices and recall such things as carbo-loading.

Nearly time to turn out the lights for an hour ... got wine and candles lined up.

Chris, good to hear that the HR monitor is having a positive affect for both of you. I sense there will be a new Jedi mega-meter master in our midst soon! Thats what the J in AJ stands for - right?

For sure ... A-Jedi Paddler ... "Do or do not ... There is no try."

(and that lesser known quote: "Lost a planet Master Obi-Moose has. How embarrassing.")

Great job w/ the Stats

Post by acrewer » April 1st, 2008, 12:04 pm

As usual, great job with the stats. I should however admit that I forgot to post my meters on Friday, so Monday's (15,167 m) included both days. I have 161k to my first lifetime million, if I can get 40k/week for April I'll make it. It may be tough, but I think it's doable. It's just hard to get more than 30 min /day on the erg.

Hey Gina, you're a LUNA-TIC and you know what that means don't you? You most definitely can do it! I too have a hard time getting on the erg for more than a half hour a day. On the weekends I have a little more flexibility. If it's the same with you, keep the 30 min during the week and try to crank it up on the weekends. You'll get there. And when you do, let C2 know. They send you a t-shirt and pin for your accomplishments.

Congrats in advance!
Karyn
