Woohoo! Congratulations to Ted C-G on achieving a TWO million meter season! We wish you many, many more! In fact, if you could row some extra this month, we'd be delighted!
Thanks for the woohoo, (way too many fireworks  ), and all the woohoo work you do. And thanks to all my Lunatic crewmates, who inspire and encourage me every day.

Now let's row out there and kick some Virtual...
Slow and Steady is my pace, so it seems,
Slow and Steady wins the race, in my dreams.

Luna-Tics Virtual Team Challenge Thru Day 7

Post by Kona2 » January 8th, 2010, 8:54 am

Image Congratulations - we made it through week one!

Wowzer, mates! This business of getting back to work after the holidays and then having to ROW .... well, this not a sport or exercise for the faint of heart, is it?! Sissies either. For perspective, during the non-challenge times of year (those exist???!), Thursday's are one of our least productive days for meters. And we are right on target for our total meters to come in at goal of 14.7 MM for the challenge. Where did THAT goal come from? I made it up! :D We raked in 14 MM during the holiday challenge month, so I figured we must be up for it!

Challenge meters thru 7 of 31 = 3,376,653 m

Total meters on the day = 358,702 m

Crew on the roster = 99

Percent of crew checking in for the challenge: 70 percent

Wow!! Way to put in the meters!

My busy work week is over, meters are uploaded (no half marathons this time, Kona2).

My wrists are a little sore--does anyone else have this problem?

Hello from Timbuk2!! Sore wrists, yes indeedy!! Sore elbow joints and carpal tunnel syndrome! When I row I wear wrist supports, hand grips and elbow support.A gel seat to boot!! Rowing for me takes more time to prepare for the ride than the row itself.. B)    But it is worth every minute of prep time.I strap on my heart rate monitor and look a sight.. Wired for the ride but all the various supports really help to alleviate discomfort and prevent injury.Take the time to strengthen all the supporting muscles that help you row so you can keep on rowing. This is my 4th or 5th JVC and I did over a million meters in my first attempt at a challenge..Enjoy the ride and good job all you Luna-Tics!!!

You reminded me, Pat, that the mush dogs delivered my gel seat from Canada this week. I was expecting something much squishier and gel-like; this feels similar to the sorbo (sore-no-more) pad. Which is fine; they're both so much better than the basic seat.

MT - I do distance more than sprints, and change my hand position frequently during a row - which makes my wrists happier. (Thumbs up, thumbs down; hands on the outside, then close to the chain.) I work at a computer all day, and am always doing wrist stretches and exercises, especially bending them down for a few seconds at a time.

My gel seat came from Canada too..came pretty quick.I was surprised but pleasantly so. :D I thought it would be much more gel like or soft but I like the way it stays in place..never slides and nothing to have to tie anywhere or stick on.It is an improvement over the normal seat and the seat pad that Concept sells/offers us.I am happy with it and so is my rear!! There's a Challenge Going On?

Post by DuluthMoose » January 9th, 2010, 1:41 pm

OK LunaTic Challenge Team, time for a gut check. It would seem the team can do better than 20 rowers posting meters for a rather anemic 293,000 meters on a challenge day! We normally do that on days without any challenge going on! That's more than 150,000 meters short of our daily goal! And granted there are a few that post their meters weekly, but according to the challenge rules that should have happened yesterday (on Fridays) and therefore show up as a bump in Kona2's report today.

For those of you who need encouragement, reflect a little today. If you set goals that are now out of reach, please don't give up. Stuff happens. Reset your Challenge goals to a more realistic number of meters you can row preferably on a daily basis for the rest of the challenge, and then add another 5% or 10% for personal triumph. I encourage you to set your goals to numbers of meters rather than the smoke and mirrors goal of rowing more than a particular rival rower. That rivalry can serve as a benchmark and incentive, but it will be a severe letdown when things don't go as planned. And this happens frequently.... By rowing for an attainable number of meters, you are in Control. If it helps, by all means state your goal on our home page, and the team can help cheer you on.

We Can Kick Some Rowing Butt if We All Pull Together!

seat pads

I alternated between the two pads (sorbo and gel) each day this week and, quite frankly, don't notice a significant difference. As mentioned, the gel has a smaller surface and I briefly felt like I was "falling off" when I first tried it, but after a few minutes it felt quite normal. (You're a much smaller person than me, so you wouldn't register that!) AJ didn't even notice that I was changing the pads, so obviously he has no preference either. I think they're similar in price. You just plunk them on the C2 seat and they stay put until you're done, then pick them up and leave (if you row in a gym).

My gel pad took a long time to get here from Canada but, in fairness, it was over the holidays. The mush dogs needed a break.

I, too, alternated between the gel and the sorbo this week. The sorbo I ordered was only available in bright red - no chance of leaving that on the rower at the gym! Get the sunglasses! The biggest difference is indeed the "seatprint" - the sorbo covers most of the surface of the rowing seat, and there is no slip sliding away as rowing short surface meets the sorbo pad. The gel pad takes a couple of times to break in, but then is quite stable and stationary. The gel pad has less of a post it note stickiness than the sorbo.

Both worked well...and both are a vast improvement over the plain rowing seat. I think that the full marathon distance is still going to be a bit painful, but it will be painful on many levels.

As far as gloves and changing hand positions so you don't get that numb carpal tunnel stuff going on - absolutely watch your form, and don't forget to power up with the legs.

Thank you, Pat, Chris, and Barbara, for your tips on avoiding wrist soreness. :D I will give them a try.

Thanks for this, Moose. Your message really hit home for me. I've erged more in the last week and a half, on a daily basis, than I ever have (since getting my model D 10/15/09). And my body is paying the price. :(

More backstory: In my twenties I was very active--river guide, ski lift operator, runner, cyclist, climber. Then I finished college and spent my 30's in front of a computer. It was a very tough shift to go from working physical jobs to sitting all day, but I did it. Now, at 40, I'm 30 lbs. overweight and trying to get back into shape. It's pretty clear I need to let go of past expectations  and focus on realistic goals for the present. So, my current goal is to row 30 minutes each day (~5,000 meters) and not get an overuse injury. Not what I had hoped to achieve for JVC, but better to keep rowing than be sidelined with an injury.

MT -- glad to be in the team boat with you all...thanks for the tips/encouragement. :D
p.s. MT was my nickname from my highschool cross country team.
