Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
I strongly recommend the heart rate monitor for anyone over 40, esp. if you're increasing distance or intensity... or in the heat... or as a way to gauge training or improvement... or someone overweight... or for a beginner... you get the idea!dr. espo wrote: ...you are absolutely correct about the HR. I even have a cardio belt but haven't used it recently, i'll have to put that on today.
I CAN imagine it, tho I've never done it. My PB (Personal Best) is 17:20, my SB (Season's Best) is 17:38 so far. But I'm aiming for it, nevertheless, elbows allowing...dr. espo wrote: I can't imagine what you have to do to get a sub-17 minute 5k row, that number is amazing...likely to give me a heart attack so I won't be going there, lol. ...
Glad to hear! Remember to swivel at the hips with your "core muscles" firm (as in the video J.B. uploaded) - it will still recruit your back & abdominal muscles, but without over-stressing them.dr. espo wrote: And yes, you are right on as far as my finish going to only the 12o'clock position due to lower back issues, so I do lose some meters there, no question. However, just the fact I have been rowing has helped strengthen other "opposing" muscles in my scapular areas as well as lower back. In several areas the lower back pain and shoulder pain I was having is very much reduced...
Yes, back to the galleys for the 3rd set of 100K! No slacking! (Okay! Congratulations on reaching the 200K mark!)dr. espo wrote:Thanks for your detailed comments, now back to our regularly scheduled program: row, row, row your C2... Mike
Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Hey Izzz, besides the 200K I actually hit 1.5 million total meters, a drop in the bucket for most around here but a big number for me, just have to keep on the rower!
BTW, with the times you are logging for the 5 K I would estimate you body fat percentage at about 2%...am I close?!

thanks Lisa, but I would really rather be running in the beautiful areas your frequent! Unfortunately, my vertibrae just can't take the impact compression...ahhh, getting older is such fun! On the other hand, thank goodness for the C2, its been a lifesaver for me!damselfly wrote:Nice rowing Dr. E!

Joe, that was a terrific video. As I compare my form I realized that while I was "sorta" doing that pelvic tilt, I was not accenting it enough, very informative, thanks!

1.5M is a great number, you need to celebrate every little victory!dr. espo wrote:Hey Izzz, besides the 200K I actually hit 1.5 million total meters, a drop in the bucket for most around here but a big number for me, just have to keep on the rower!

I'm about to hit 5 million... thought I'd hit it Thursday night, maybe Sunday morning, but with this heat, it may take an extra couple of days.
2% body fat is VERY close - actually, it's somewhere between 25 - 30%, though one handheld says 31% body fat. I'm 6' 2.5" & 252 pounds. One of the big impediments to my bettering my times is that I can't quite get parallel for the "catch" since my belly gets in the way. (Theoretically, your chest should touch your knees at the catch. I'm glad when my chest can wave to my knees in the distance.) Every time I lop off another 5-10 pounds, my speed improves noticeably. My 6:42.5 at the CRASH-Bs was at 245 lbs. (Besides lengthening my stroke when I have less belly in the way, it also improves oxygen usage, since a) VO2Max goes per Kg. of weight, and b) I'm not wasting valuable oxygen to supply excess fat stores with sustenance.) Still way better than my high weight of 330, or the 313 I was at when I was diagnosed with diabetes.
BTW, most of the gained weight is muscle, as I've been lifting more often. I felt that the 3 things keeping me from going below 6:30 for the 2K were: 1) More "rated" strokes were needed (less strokes per minute with more power per stroke) in preparation, in "building a base", 2) more strength/power in general, that would translate to more power per stroke, and 3) lower weight, probably about 215-220lbs. (There are other things worth working on, but they would yield results measured in the 1/10ths of seconds, these 3 would yield results measured in seconds.) Hence, more resistance training, aiming for strength first, then adding more speed & endurance components closer to a race.

Re: TimbukTOO Team Room
Hey team!!! Finally I'm back to my "normal" life after doing tornado clean up and then a protracted road trip. Our rowing club is getting back also. We had a great row yesterday morning. We rowed upstream about 2.5k doing drills and then spun the boat. Just as we were spinning the rain started. We built up speed and did a mock 2k head race back to the dock rowing all 8. There were a number of first year rowers... this was the longest they had ever rowed continuously. It was awesome those few strokes when everything clicked and the boat cut through the water dead on with even catches and releases! In the heat at 6:30 a.m. the rain felt glorious...
Been working out with our coach from last year who is in town till next Thursday on the erg.... she is 23, I'm 59... she makes me work to keep up with her!! I'm working up to rate a 500 meter piece next week under her guidance....
