this is the first time i am posting so i hope i do this right and you can all understand me. i will try not to write a megillah...just the relevant facts.

i have a model C and have been rowing consistently since Nov 05. I worked up from 40 min at a heart rate of at least 130 to 60 min and i row about 5 days a week for a min of 60 min which usually works out to at least 10000 meters. i do intervals sometimes .. but all in all i make sure that my pulse is somewhere between 130 and 150 which is probably more than POLAR says you should do but my aerobic shape is good. when i go down from a fast minute to my slower 4 minutes it takes only about a min for my pulse to come down 20 points..... sometimes i just row without the intervals. i make sure to do this cardio religiously now and i am watching what i am eating pretty much as folks have outlined on this thread. i am a veggie as well.

im happy to report ive lost around 32 lbs since Nov 05 and my goal is to lose about another 50 which would put me back to where i was when i was a fit runner, before i tried to have kids and fertility meds put 50 lbs on me BEFORE i even got pregnant. i was somewhere around 130 but most importantly i felt really strong and healthy . oh yeah. i liked wearing normal clothes.

well back to the sad part of the story. the meds put 50 lbs on me...Then i had twins (only gained 42 lbs with two of them in there!) b ut still it was close to 100 extra lbs on my feet and since the birth of my twins there were at least 4 t hings wrong with my feet. 6 YEARS of physical therapy have left me with still some problems and most of the wt... and rowing the kindest exercise for me now.. i miss running but its not in the cards right now.

so , ive lost the 30 lbs ...yay. now im about 178 and in addition to 5-6 rowing days (60 min) i do pilates twice a week with a private person for a year now, and i feel i am getting much stronger. i did free wts in the past and am adding that back into my training about three times a week.

so any ideas about the rowing workout ITSELF now? should i do anything diff each day when i row other than the 60 min row?

i still have 50 lbs to go...that is alot of wt and doing 60 min of rowing what can i do differently now to keep the progress in a good direction and at a good pace? i think my body wasnt used to regular cardio but now its been 5 or 6 months and i dont want my body to habituate. i dont have that many options. ive been walking on the treadmill about one or two days a week but not more. i have had very bad plantar fascitis several times, i have unexplained foot neuropathy (nerve pain) which is burning and stinging constantly (its horrible. i dont wish chronic pain on anyone...) and a neuroma as well...so i HAVE to be kind to my feet.

when i do wts i use an elliptical traiiner for 5 min to keep the cardio level up and then alternate between two or three exercises and step ups so it makes about a 40 min aerobic session in addition to the rowing one earlier in the day. is this the right forum? the right thread? any ideas are welcome!

i am just so tired of these fat clothes. im out of my gargantuan clothes but tucking a shirt in would be a nice change.

one more question: i have a model c. can anyone tell me how the model D feels different if you have rowed on both?

sincerely, workinprogress.

first week

Post by gooroo » May 1st, 2006, 8:30 am

i had the posterboy CRAP DIET and CRAP LIFESTYLE.... i ate mcdonalds and hungry jacks (which you yanks call burger king) 3-4 times a week.... for a variation i'd have a couple of large pizzas. then id sit in front of a pc or maybe sit in front of the tv. my hero was homer simpson.

when i turned 30 i finally decided enough is enough so i took a coupla weeks off work and committed to sorting myself out. my model D arrived last monday - at the same time i stopped eating crap.

ive never really thought about calories or exercise or any of that "healthy" stuff..... for the past week ive had NO fast food and actually started paying attention to the calories in stuff i shove down my throat. i also put in some serious pain on the erg.

so after week 1 im pleased to report....

24/04/06 - 130.8kg
01/05/06 - 126.8kg
and a total of 18kilometres rowed.

i realise i have a LONG way to go - but i've learnt a hell of a lot about nutrition and exercise in the last week and i actually feel better after a row (well - about 30 minutes after a row anyway). posting here will hopefully give me a bit more motivation to keep going.

although im already feeling much better i'd still sell my soul for a large big mac meal

This is in response to the request by "workinprogress" above:

To improve my fitness & keep my workouts more interesting, I had most success when I planned out my workouts a month or more in advance, with incrementally harder workouts. At first it seemed too easy, but I avoided injury and improved well with time. It seems to help keep my energy up when every other day is either off (of rowing) or just rowing at whatever feels like a slow, easy pace. There's a point when I start losing my gains--when I go several days between workouts. But as long as I don't take more than a couple days off at a time, my progress has been steady.

For example, Day 1 with 30 minutes at an easy pace, "x."

Day 2, 25 minutes at "x", 5 minutes at a pace 5 seconds faster per 500 m.

Alternating days either off or back to 30 minutes at easy pace, "x"

Next: 10 minutes at "x"
5 minutes at 5 seconds faster per 500 m
10 minutes at "x"
5 minutes at 5 seconds faster per 500 m

day off/slow 30 minutes

Next: 8 minutes at "x"
7 minutes at "x-5 seconds"
8 minutes at "x"
7 minutes at "x-5"
5 minutes at "x"

You get the idea. You decide how much to lengthen the new faster interval each time, and by how much power or speed. The main thing is to make it slightly more challenging each time. This might not work for super competitive rowers, but that's not me.

I just posted on the Healthy Habits thread, but thought that I'd weigh in here (pun intended!) also.

I've been at 164-163 for over a year now, after watching my weight creep up over the several years before that. I'm primarily a runner, and I have a mostly healthy diet, but obviously what I've been doing hasn't helped with the Thunder Thighs. I decided I needed a BIG goal, so I signed up for the Route 66 Marathon in Tulsa this November, trying to qualify to return to Boston next April. (That requires a 4 hour time or better for my age group.)

I also resolved to be more vigilant with my diet and my erging. The schedule is to run 4 days a week and erg the other 3 days, with biking added on 1 or 2 days a week. I also take a class in Irish step dancing, so I've been trying to be more consistent with practice and resulting calorie burning.

I stepped on the scale a couple of days ago and was very upset to see a 9 at the end of the number-- I thought that I'd somehow gained 5 pounds. Then I realized that it was 159, not 169! Wow, what a thrill!

Congratulations to all of you who have worked hard to be healthy and lose so much weight. You're an inspiration to me.

well, that did not work at all... i mean the keeping it off part. i bounced back up. I just weighed myself before I ate dinner and I was 261.7
and oddly enough, I am not dissapointed at all. that is better than I though i would be. most of the weight that I lost (when sick) was water/muscle weight so not fat.
anyways, progress is progress even if it is a step backwards.

WIOTW--152lbs. No change. During the week my weight fluctuated--as high as 155 then back down to 152-153. Must keep going.

WIOTW--152lbs. No change but weight pretty steady all week. I may be near my ideal weight so I'm not going to make myself crazy, just sticking to my routine. :D

EDIT: put some new batteries in my Tanita scale and measured a 17.8% bodyfat reading.
