That hasn't stopped you from not flying to an event in the past.

That hasn't stopped you from signing up for an event, showing up at the event, then deciding not to race.

That hasn't stopped you from signing up for an event, showing up at the event, starting the race, then handling down halfway through and quitting.

How could anybody ever question your intentions?
:D :D

Yea, I have some pretty freaky behavior.

Oh well.

It only human to be nuttier than a fruitcake.

Basically, we're all bonkers.

Not possible, unless I have a weight problem.

That is why I am making the 90min on the bike each day a pretty high priority.

Mike--

You might be interested in this note from your doubles partner John Pauls:

I have left it at 1.0 as we row with a current in St. Catharines. I have
found that this matches the course distance when doing a 4K loop(2k with
current, and 2K against current).
I have also found that this is with in 10 - 20 meters either way when racing
a 1000m pce on the flat water course (dead water)in Welland.
I don't get too concerned as weeds are always an issue as well.
The main thing is that I can relate speed from one workout to another.
FYI

John--

What do you use as a calibration factor on your speed coach when you
row in a Fluid EL?

Mike VB says that .968 seems to work for him.

Does .968 work for you?

Best,

Rich Cureton

Funny, you keep telling us that weight doesn't matter on the erg...in fact, you are faster fat (you can't get anywhere near your Baltimore performance, when weighed in) so I guess your weight problem when you pull 6:45 at BIRC will be that you didn't weigh enough

Seems we've seen some rapid degradation of achievement... It was 1:58 pace just a few days ago.... :?

What happened to the Grand -test drive thingy.. at 24 spm in the "Netherwind"?
Or, are you going to use the "think" technique to get you through the race at the end of October? B)

I find this mystifying.
As I suggested, you should check your calibration yourself to double check.
For the last two years I have been trying to get my readouts to match actual course distances...
I succeeded with the .968 factor...
I wish I knew why my SpeedCoach impeller is affected differently....

Rich, (as I said in a prior post)
Don't you have an accurately measured course somewhere nearby where you can check yours?

BTW: Rich: I did two non-stop 10ks in 45' & change today (well below AT)... see my blog later for more details...

What were your non-stop times and associated distances OTW today?

Mike--

I believe you about the speed coach.

I'll keep the calibration on .968.

Yea, that's the kind of thing I can do now.

I couldn't do it until just recently, though.

The weeds were too thick.

Now, I am getting some open water.

So I can get some times on continuous 5Ks, 10Ks, 15Ks, and 20Ks.

The longer rows will have one hairpin turn, and so will be slowed down somewhat.

But what the heck.

No course is perfect (except the Connecticut River north toward Hanover :D :D )

The times I was reporting before I changed the calibration factor were 4 seconds per 500m faster than I am getting now.

So that's one thing.

The course I am rowing is only 2.6K long with a big turn.

That's another thing.

Then this is just practice.

I will not be racing.

I will just be pacing myself over the course.

To do 2:10, I would probably rate 24 spm.

If I can do that for one loop, eventually, I can do it for two loops, three loops, four loops.

I am not working that hard when I am rating 24 spm, certainly not AT, just UT1.

As I have mentioned, when I am fully prepared for it and do an all out 5K, I'll rate 30 spm.

On this course, 2:10 @ 24 spm would be great for me, just as a practice session.

Only a couple of Veterans did the Head of the Charles last year at 2:10 or faster.

This from Marianne Moore might be relevant.

A poem about Jamestown, called "Enough: Jamestown, 1607-1957"

Some of the first lines, and then some of the last:

Some in the Godspeed, the Susan C.,
others in the Discovery,

found their too earthly paradise,
a paradise in which hope dies,

found pests and pestilence instead,
the living outnumbered by the dead.

...

With nothing but the feeble tower
to mark the site that did not flower,

could the most ardent have been sure
that they had done what would endure?

It was enough: it is enough
if present faith mend partial proof.
