And, Jan..after you use the Grips for a longer period of time..they mold to your hand.It will be like shoes that you have broken in and fit like the proverbial glove. The new feel goes away by regular use. When I broke out a new set..it was hard to get used to but the old set were just so great.
They were beginning to tear at the side ..so I decided to try new ones. The more you wear them the better they get.

The New Grip forces you to keep your thumbs in alignment with your fingers - this gives you less flex on the wrist (a good thing) and more power.
I don't believe that this position is best or more powerful. Most good rowers (or ergers) have their thumbs either relaxed barely touching the inner front of the handle or sometimes below the handle, but very loose.

You can have a look at the men's open at crash B: http://www.concept2.com/us/training/rac ... sp?race=31

The quality of this video is bad and there are probably much better examples, but it was what I could find on short notice.

Personally I don't use gloves, so I can't give advice to those that do. However I think that many issues with blisters and numbness have to do with gripping too tightly. the grip should be very loose and relaxed and should resemble the grip on a pull up bar more than the grip on lifting a weight. Even a pull-up bar you would be gripping much tighter than you should in rowing.

"Kona2:" Top of the morning to the west coast of the US ... and I am totally not sure of what's going on with the Aussies ...
It seems like it's "always tomorrow" in Oz. (If it's 9AM on Wednesday in San Francisco, it's probably real early on Thursday AM in Sydney.) I grew up in Australia, and visited a while back: we left SFO and crossed the international date line right before my 40th birthday, cunningly jumping us to the next day and ensuring that I never did turn 40.

With these New Grips..you can use them to grip as best for rowing..not tight and with thumbs on top of bar and they are very versatile in the way they are utilized. There is a special strap that places the rower's fingers in the best position. These were developed with rowers in mind..indoor as well as outdoor. They were not bought and adapted to the rowing experience but were developed for us.The versatility in them allows for weight lifters and rowers and all types of activities to adapt them to their individual use. There are/is debates on glove usage with the rower and I feel that there is no right or wrong answer. It is the same premise as weight lifting and methodology.Speak to a group of trainers and /or actual athletes..you will get as many ideas, opinions and methods as people in the room.I am in no way associated with this company and am not in any way endorsing them.I just know that as a serious indoor erger and enthusiast..I have had a number of issues that merit the use of the New Grips.I want to share my experiences.I hate to use this team forum as a product forum..but had to add my 2 cents.I apologize for the interruption in this team's forum.

re: ROWING GLOVES

Post by Kona2 » March 12th, 2008, 3:53 pm

Perhaps I miscommunicated on the gloves review. After watching the video (good find on short notice), I agree with the idea that a loose grip is important. I think the New Grip (or similar suggestions) helps facilitate that looseness instead of giving a strangle hold! I know I'm still learning about this sport, and appreciate thoughts shared by other rowers/ergers. Seems like rowing without gloves would still promote callus formation, even if grip is loose, though.

I know our intent is not to endorse a specific product as much as to share experiences and information with each other - so it seems entirely appropriate (and a good thing, too!) that we stop and have these virtual conversations. I didn't want poor technique or maybe the wrong tools to get me into an overuse injury. I'll let funkiness reign for a bit - noting that even weight lifting gloves get funky - I usually know that it is time to get new ones when one of the dogs steals a glove off the rower handle.....

NARC

Post by Calamity » March 12th, 2008, 6:19 pm

thanks for the smilies and congrats. It feels pretty good as i have been thinking about a million since I started erging. On another note, I know some of you like wordplay so heres the question: Can you come up with new slogans for NARC? Something like New Amazing Rear Coming or New Atmospheric Rungs Complete?
