Wow, just wow, danwho! That's the best compilation of NYE drinks, in the history of Ten-Forward. You out-did yourself ... and, I'm still getting over the "keep it coming" virtual effects ... it's obviously your fault that I've avoided rowing or biking for several days ... :)

Hooboy - we've had fire and ice in rapid succession!
Nothing good about a fire-related evacuation, followed by a deep freeze ... but, what a cool picture! Didn't Robert Frost write a poem called Fire and Ice ... something about the end of the world?! But, first, the January Challenge. Onwards.

Some of you will have seen that suburban and urban wildfires, the worst in our state history, occurred in my part of the world yesterday. It's been horrific to watch, and yet like a train wreck, you couldn't not watch. It's more than structures that are lost - it's memories, it's the home nest of those you often know. Because it occurred right over the hill, I was involved directly and indirectly.

I was going to say that yesterday didn't turn out as expected...but it actually did turn out exactly as I thought it might. Fierce winds are not uncommon along this corridor of the world, and the fact that more of this corridor is developed than it was 30 years ago when I bought this property has generally served to provide a bit more buffer from the winds. Except for when the gazebo plexiglass roof flew off towards Kansas (twice!) - those were 100 mph gusts too. I sincerely hope that the counties involved (it's like the Bermuda triangle here: Jefferson, Adams and Boulder) use some infrastructure monies to bury the utilities before they bury us. The winds knocked down the power lines into the native grass = the drought and climate change made the native grasses fine, fine fuel. And the winds pushed the flames faster, and hotter towards suburbia. The first smoke plumes were seen around 10:30 AM yesterday. By 1:30 PM, there were three fires of note and they had traveled something like 10 miles. The winds kept shifting: vectors east, south, then back to west and north. The realization that evacuation might occur struck me about that time, and I began collecting dog food, dog bowls, kitty litterbox, clothes for a couple days, and documents....I tried hard to stay on task, because you just didn't know how much time you really had.

Meanwhile, a little north of here, pre-evac orders went out and then mandatory orders. Traffic jams of 1.5 hrs for people trying to go a single mile were occurring. I looked at the hillside, calculating just how much time I would actually have if that fire crested the hill...and I got in the truck and left for a very understanding friend's house...one who would let me bring 2 big dogs and a cat. It was 5 PM. The official pre-evac notice came at 5:30 PM, followed by mandatory evacuation at 9 PM. The fires were well covered by the local stations, and I watched my favorite golf course burn. Golf friends were accomodating other golf friends at a moment's notice - and their pets. Through the evening and night, my mantra was "it will be what it will be." I wondered if I had seen my house for the last time. That was a sobering kind of thought.

Mandatory evacuation supposedly ended around midnight here for this subdivision - I was reasonably confident that given that I could access the doorbell camera and interior ones, that I had power and the house was still standing. Specifics as to this burned, this didn't weren't super forthcoming particularly when flames were still flanking on the west side. You kind of want to see your reality with your own eyes - and I did, finally, around 11 AM today.

I learned that I do need a list for what should be in my "GO bag" or "GO documents file" - and if you don't have one of these lists, I encourage you to make one also. I had a couple of hours to prepare - and some of the people in Louisville and Superior had a minute or two - just enough time to grab kids and pets and hit the road. I had time to photograph all the rooms, and most of the contents of drawers, etc. Something better done when you'r emotions aren't all over the place. And so it is that among my THINGS TO DO IN 22 ...this preparation step will be there. I like to be prepared - you have so many more options then! And I am so grateful for good friends.

I so sorry for all those who lost so much.
I am glad you are okay.
Good luck to everyone on recovering from this huge challenge.

A correction...no power lines were found to be down. Investigators are zeroing in on human causation...a potential illegal burning on a red flag wind day...

Image21st!

Sign on....sign on....sign on to the Lunie Challenge Team!

Our team standing would be MUCH higher if we could capture all the meters that our teammates are generating! Some of you may think you already DID sign up...! But we can't count your meters UNLESS you sign on to the Challenge team. In fact, we'd move up about 10 rungs on the ladder! Here's how to sign up!

Go to your logbook. Scroll across to the heading that says TEAMS. You will see the heading Current Challenge, Virtual Team Challenge. Click on the join this challenge toggle. All team members must be added to the Challenge roster by January 16. It only takes a few seconds to make sure you're on the roster!

Image21st overall...BUT...14th among virtual teams (and it IS the virtual team challenge!)

Knew I had to find a different way to look at these rankings ! We've got less than 200K between us and 9th place. In fact, so many teams are SO CLOSE together that it is a real race, which is what the fun is all about. So. To the ergs, teammates, to the ergs!!

Thanks to our Lunie Challenge Team for putting us on the virtual teams map! Leading the list of participants is Judy Abbott of Indiana. She's showing us that you can lead the pack no matter what your age is, and we love to see that! Norma Imageis throwing down some serious meters, too! Take a look at the Lunie Challenge Team (and, yes, if your name isn't showing up....really would like to see it there!). https://log.concept2.com/team/2537/vtc/2022

Don't know how many of you are Mandalorian fans...but its spinoff Boba Fett just recently started showing some episodes. To my surprise, cartoonists have already jumped on this (first cartoon Mandalorian I've seen also). As always, I urge you to support cartoonists such as the one who produces The Argyle Sweater comic above, whether by asking your digital provider to pick up this comic strip for distribution or (gasp!) actually seeing it in a real newspaper.

Image21st overall...AND...15th among virtual teams ...

There's a small regional airport about a mile from here. While it is expanding runways, etc., so far really big planes can't fly in/out of there. With the Air Academy and a couple of air bases close by, we often see F15s streaking through the sky (or the Thunderbird formation) or doing some touch and go's. I think those flyboys and flygals get a kick out of rocking the neighborhood - and truth be told, it is fun to see. The thrum of twin Black Hawks seems a bit different though, and that's what we had hovering over us as Marine 1 landed. I wondered how many Marine 1's there were to get that special transport from place to place - but now realize that Marine 1 and the presidential limo are flown in tandem with Air Force 1 in a cargo plane. The logistics are kind of mind boggling.

Image
Marine 1 - wasn't sure what I had captured on camera, but am sure it's Marine 1 with the flag etc. Telephoto worked pretty well!

We're closing in on one-third completion of the January Virtual Team Challenge, the fuel source for your January Revolution Challenge! How's that working out for you? If your number of hours is equivalent to one-third of your goal, you've chosen wisely Grasshopper. If you've banked hours ahead, now is the time to bump up your goal. Tomorrow is the last day to change up whatever goal you selected in the Revolution Challenge! My personal mantra on this one is (1) don't miss two days in a row, and (2) even if I don't have time/energy for the full erg session, at least do SOMETHING.

Image22nd overall...AND...16th among virtual teams ...

There's hardly an eyeblink between our Lunie Challenge Team and the team that bumped us down a notch...seriously, less than 20K at the time of this posting!

And now for something completely different, but really amazing. A friend of mine spends half of the year in Sierra Leone, a country on the west coast of Africa. Electricity and running water are not givens, and where they exist there may be interruptions. Still, she worked with the School of Mines here and in technical roles in oil and gas. During the time that she and her husband spend there, they have helped install solar panels (with advice from School of Mines). Teaching kids reading and writing is a source of great fun and satisfaction. During this trip, the village is building a library/community center. The construction progress is incredible. The site was excavated - not with powerful machinery either. Bricks are made of mud/clay - probably using some hydraulic compression. She's posted some of these photos on her social media account, and I'm sharing them here just to show what is possible when you don't have a lot of material things, but you do have some desire to get things done.
