Luck of the draw, also. Mike won his heat (there was no final); because everyone was in the same category there was apparently no handicapping. One of the other heats combined categories, so they adjusted the times in it per handicap.

I honestly don't remember how they award medals at DS.

Ranger absent from OTW regatta

Post by Byron Drachman » July 25th, 2010, 12:36 pm

I thought I would put a link to a photo from the MCI (Ann Arbor) regatta. Our intrepid hero manages to be elsewhere every year. It would be a good event for our hero. It appears to be more or less a straight shot from start to finish. However, the course is tricky because of currents and even some highly skilled rowers had to do some unexpected steering to stay in their lanes. Of course it would be nothing like the HOCR but it would make a good first attempt. I got to chat with some Ann Arbor Rowing Club members. What a nice, friendly group of people.

I am the geezer (70-74 age group) in bow seat. My double partner got a back injury last week and a youngster was kind of enough to do the row with me. I confess we didn't go fast but there is always next time. The tailgating was fabulous.

Then again, why should Mike care?

If I pull a lwt 6:16 at 60 on the erg, I will get the 60s lwt WR, but not the 55s lwt WR, or 50s lwt WR, or 40s lwt WR, or 55s hwt WR, or 60s hwt WR, but I really won't care if someone younger and heavier went slower.

BTW, this is nice:

At 75 kgs., 1:45 @ 26 spm is 4 watts/kg., 1:38 @ 32 spm 5 watts/kg., and 1:32 @ 38 spm 6 watts/kg.

Yesterday, 15K on the erg in the morning; 7K OTW in the afternoon.

This morning: 12 OTW

_Gorgeous_ sunrise--calm, clear, warm.

Perfect conditions.

Revved it up to 1:45 at one point, but spent most of the time working on technique--catches, mainly.

I was the only one out on Europe Lake a 5 a.m. up here in Door County, WI.

Mike just rowed the fastest raw time at Diamond States in the Men's E-F event but evidently has come second on handicap to a rower whose time OTW he beat by some 13 seconds. Heat index at the moment in Midletown DE is 100F. And it's always hotter at Noxontown Pond....
How does it go? Age, cunning, and treachery will beat out youth, strength, and skill?

Sorry you can't get in more than 2k without spinning the boat.
Not a good situation for distance training. :(

Enjoy the time off from hard training.

My time in Door County is more important to me than rowing--and has a much longer personal history--a half a century of summers.

These summers in Door Country are reunions with extended family and friends (in various cities, states, and countries).

Right now we eight: besides myself--my wife, my eldest son, my brother and his wife, a friend from Sweden, and my nephew and his wife.

My daughter and her boyfriend, my second son and his girlfriend, and my best childhood friend and his wife will arrive this weekend

Enjoy the regatta.

If I can find the time, I'll shoot for some head races this fall and some sprint races next spring and summer.

I am not distance training in my 1x, or even working very hard.

I am just drilling on technique.

I use the erg for my hard work and distance training.

Whenever I can, I do both--every day.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for coming up with another excuse for going so slowly. I'd like to blame it on the headwind. It was windy on Saturday at that time but the river is well protected from the wind so the conditions were good on the water. I think I'll just say that I wasn't fully trained and sharpened. Yes, doubles are great fun.

I can see how that would be important to you. Not many chances for a guy like you to be in a situation year after year where people actually make the effort to like you...but frankly, it would probably be a special treat if the crazy uncle missed a week! Even more so if they didn't have to listen to your "explanations" of how you were really the best rower of the day despite being trounced.

congratulations to Mike on an excellent row and result at DSR. Once again, he wasn't pushed - unfortunately, as a bit more competition might actually make him go even faster!

Too bad his erstwhile competitor - rangerboy - was nowhere to be found.

until, and unless, rangerboy actually defeats Mike (the best in his class) in a race OTW, rangerboy's claims, chest-pounding, self-aggrandizing and general BS will remain just that.

one thing we'll never see -
