"Badass" sounds like Cincinnati to me. I'm interested in "endued." I would have expected the more common "imbued." Endued is a word used by academcs and clerics. You by any chance a teacher or preacher, John?
Good going, Mike. Anyone other than a bad ass would have HD'd when struggling for oxygen. A dude endued with fortitude is not easily subdued.

Glenn, I hope after some time away you come back to the training board. I always looked at your times for motivation. 54 and 5' 8", you put out some serious power! Best of luck.
I attempted the 5x1500 r5. I didn't know how to pace these since I've never done an all out 5000 (the pacing Pete suggests)

Thanks GB. I'm too stupid to stop. Just am very frustrated that I have a couple of barriers that i can't poke through yet. I have a race end of January that I am on for - 3rd year doing it. Am going to step back and then give it another whirl. But right now I know that I am working against myself a bit. Hopefully it's just a bad week. Other things going on at the moment may be affecting my outlook.

Thanks for the kind words Mike.mdpfirrman wrote:You are hereby dubbed John A and John N. John N - 19:24 was it on the 5K (I took some time and read some of your blog). Seriously? At 70. Wow! We have some pretty great rowers in this little group. Lindsay is world class too in his age group. Joe (even though he's been busy at work) was top five in the world or so (over 40 heavyweights). I'm probably forgetting some others (I'm sure Dean is ranked way up there on his distance pieces as well).
Lindsay is the one who pointed me toward this forum thread. Lindsay is also the one who helped me turn away from turning away from rowing harder, when I was thinking that maybe I should take it a lot easier as the years pass.
I'm guessing Lindsay going to be on the podium at the upcoming BIRC if not set a 2K world record, the way he's going.
My current season best time for the 5K is only 19:25.7, not 19:24. In the 70-79 world online 5K rankings I just recently passed Bill Collins (of Washington state, US) in the 5K. Bill Collins is age 71, a veteran OTW rower (I think) and he's very competitive, so I sent an email to inform him of the change in his 5K standing since he seems to love a challenge - but haven't heard back from him yet.
Everyone in this group seems to be competitive, each in their own way and according to their situation and experience, from the newest and least experienced to the oldest and/or most experienced. Everyone has their own challenges and when they have the time to write about them and how they feel, etc it gets very interesting to anyone who is any kind of an indoor rowing fanatic.

Okay I'm going to attempt to insert images of my 4x2K R5:00 session today. I assume that by "cut and paste," that's what you mean - to insert photo or screen shot of the session results.mdpfirrman wrote:
John - . . . If it's not too much trouble, I'd love to see your times / sessions if you want to cut and paste them here. You are in very elevated company with your paces for the 70+ age group. I have a ton of respect for that. Lindsay's workout partner is a 70+ very, very strong rower too (and I think WR holder for certain distances). I'm sure Lindsay's friend would take an interest in your training too (as the rest of us).
Well... the first attempt didn't work and it returned an error message of "It was not possible to determine the dimensions of the image."
So I will try to insert the URL for each image:

If there is a better way to do it, let me know... because the above method looks basically like the same thing I do when I provide a web address to the entire blog article about the session.

Piers, thanks. And - I can picture the woman on the erg next to you being startled by your victory exhalation after finishing the 4th 1K.Pie Man wrote: John, I have enjoyed reading your blog, it's going to be very interesting how your times change over the coming weeks.
Did my 4x1k yesterday, went pretty well.
Last time I averaged 1:51.8 @ 33, so was going to aim for 3:43 (1:51.7) forgot to double check my target time before I started which meant I aimed for 3:41 instead of 3:43.
This was probably as well as my 1:51.8 was 5 seconds slower than my last pyramid.
3:41.0 1:50.5 32 153HR
3:40.7 1:50.3 33 157HR
3:39.5 1:49.7 33 160HR
3:34.8 1:47.4 35 163HR
Av 1:49.5 @33, this was a tough session, but rewarding, last rep managed to pull 1:49's to 500 then pick up the pace, finishing the last 200 around 1:42's I did make the woman on the erg next to me jump when I exhaled explosively at the end, but I had enough breath to apologise and explain I was probably trying a bit too hard.
10k SS today, strapless @ 2:11.3 Av HR 117 (low UT2 for me)
It might take me as long to get used to being part of the forum on a daily basis as it will to begin showing any progress on the Pete Plan. Almost two more weeks before the first cycle is over and I can start again, plugging upwardly revised pace targets into the speed and endurance intervals.
And it might take two weeks to feel comfortable in the forum as a participant, but I feel like I know almost everyone already, having read 100% of the posts from the beginning.
I told an online rowing acquaintance who recently got involved with a different training plan about this forum after he asked about the Pete Plan and he said, "I find the forum threads chaotic, I can not really see who is reacting to who and there are 132 pages, wow!" ... I understand what he means and I've mostly stayed away from the C2 forum in the past for more or less the same reason as he tried to express. But I see that there are a lot of guys here who are getting something very good relating to their rowing by participating in the forum to even a small degree, so I will persist.
With regard to including images of PMs or RowPro session reports or other rowing software graphs etc, I'm still working on figuring out how to do that.
Your times in the 1K are impressive and when I get more familiar with looking at the spreadsheet, I'll be able to make more sense and have more appreciation for the progress of everyone who is putting their results there. (Lindsay supplied me with a link to view it)
My wife is amazed that there are more people like me who actually enjoy rowing and communicating about it. She can understand interest in her hobbies, but so far she hasn't yet embraced rowing except as something to be distracted from while doing it.
Best regards to everyone.

John, If you send me a PM with your email I can add you to the list so that you can edit it and add your times too.john_n wrote: Your times in the 1K are impressive and when I get more familiar with looking at the spreadsheet, I'll be able to make more sense and have more appreciation for the progress of everyone who is putting their results there. Also a reminder for PPers, BPPers and PP5Kers that if you're not using the spreadsheet to track and want to then fire me a PM with your email.

Glenn, I hope that it's not true that you're off and just the deamons talking. I'm sure those goals will come in time but perhaps not quite as quickly as we would hope.G-dub wrote:I think I'm out. It was fun for awhile. I felt like I was within reach. I'm not even close. Ciao.

One lesser session and you think your gains where just imaginary? Ofcourse not.JohnAd wrote:Glenn, I hope that it's not true that you're off and just the deamons talking. Also don,t forget what a good taper can do. Session wasn,t so bad, just shows that liniar gains simply don,t happen, in beginners yes, but once you are working for every second its walking on a thin line. Easy to fall off.

4x1K is a 2K+ session. On a good day you would have that last interval under 1:46 as well. (Incidentally, what kind of warm up do you do?)
Henry's right. Sometimes you have to treat a 2K PB attempt as a race and do the right prep' by way of a taper.
Regroup. Do another PP cycle -> taper -> PB.

John thanks for the vote of confidence but right now a podium finish is looking a long way away - 4 days in a row missed (and counting)! I am still thinking a minor scare but kicking myself never the less. Whilst I have a sub 6:45 in my sights there is a huge gap from there down to 6:40 I reckon but I appreciate the thoughts. it will be interesting to see where your own adventure takes you too - it is a good group to give you a push.john_n wrote:I'm guessing Lindsay going to be on the podium at the upcoming BIRC if not set a 2K world record, the way he's going
Glenn - hang in there - one bad one is just that so keep the faith as there is a lot of good will here.

You guys are the best. I really appreciate it. I woke this morning with a delusional thought: at least doing 3-1/2 at 1:45.8 is better than the 3-1/2 at 1:46.5 I did on cycle #1!
I think I blew myself out the previous weeks waterfall, 4x2, the failed 5k (which blew my mind) plus the 23K session on Saturday. I could tell my nerves and body were a bit frayed. Anyway, I'm not in Iraq or Syria and this is just sport, so I need to keep a sense of humor. See you Monday.

Thanks Gordon.
Paul - thanks for reaching out. Let's move forward. There are many more important things in life than what we can accomplish on the erg as fat middle aged men with marginal endurance! Let's remind ourselves that this is all in good fun and for good health and it doesn't warrant being blown out of proportion. We are lucky to be able to push ourselves and have a laugh about it.
