How is it possible to do 5 x 2k's back to back on friday yet not complete one at a slower pace in the race? I don't understand at all.

It must be mental.

I am very curious how he will bent this attempt in his fevor. Not to mention his weight, he wasn,t able to reach the lwgt border.

I have pulled some quotes from this thread to keep us entertained, while we all eagerly await the return of our favourite host and the resuming of our regular programming!

QUOTE(ranger @ Nov 26 2005, 06:41 PM)

At the CRASH-Bs in 2003, when I broke the WR, I weighed in at 161 lbs.
Notwithstanding Ranger's bloviation, it's always disheartening to see someone quit_a_piece.

Bad for the communal morale, I think.
It happened in Cincinnati a few times before I left, and the crowd clapped and cheered more for the struggling but persevering rower than the winner of the heat in almost all cases (except a spectacular sub-6:40 row by a novice young man -- looked like a LW schoolboy rower maybe 15/16 years of age -- that was almost at flat line rate & pace for the entire 2000 ... a marvelous row).

Therefore, I joined a track and field team instead. A week later, the coach had me take part in a 1k race. I was so slow compared to those Moroccans, it was embarrassing and I thought they would lap me! It was as if a frog on steroids (I was a breaststroker) was competing against a bunch of gazelles! To add insult to injury, the spectators were laughing at me! That was too much, and I stopped after 400m.

Even to this day, I regret not having finished that race and having let my coach down.

Francois,

That's cool you lived in Morocco.

How long were you there? Did you keep running with them?

The Moroccan's are among the best runners in the world, so that must have been a great experience to have been there and run with them.

In my opinion there is nothing wrong with stopping a race, though it depends on the circumstances and the venue.

There's a time to hold 'em and a time to fold 'em.

They can't all be winners, and there's no point betting the house on a losing proposition.

It is far better, in my opinion, to regroup and then have at it again.

Long time, no Ranger post, very strange .... would we have had to wait this long for an update if he had rowed a 6:35 WR, not a very charitable thought I know but one I have had

I hope all that talent has not gone to waste.

George

George……….
Talent?
What is talent?
I suppose it’s the ability to do something very well.
Ranger has no racing “talent”, no diplomacy “talent” and
in fact not a wiff of talent in the ability to attract admirers to
“rally around” him.
Be honest. Half of us are sort of glad that this braggart mouthed
(yet physically talented!) forum hogger failed his first race
attempt – remember – the one he was going to do virtually at
a relaxing “frothing” rate. (I’m not as industrious as George
sifting through the scores of posts to find his exact words.)
His regular 10 posts plus a day have evaporated, and I’m sure
we’ll eventually get some lame excuse on how some sort of injury
has been responsible for this. Remember – he’s the one who’s
always told us how he never has a sick day in his life.
But in perspective – Ranger obviously doesn’t like racing – so here’s a
clever suggestion. Don’t race!! He loves his Zapopeks. He loves his
hours of skipping, extension push ups, stepping and finish off with
40 X 500’s. Loves his HM and full marathons and loves his SPI
calculations. Stick to what you love Ranger. Why drag yourself
half way around the country – or the World – to do something you
don’t enjoy. Plus – you love posting on the forum too. You annoy us,
and you ridicule us, offend us, belittle us, insinuate we can’t do
what you do (and we can’t) – and attract those who believe in you
and those who think you are full of crap. That’s talent. You are good at
all this – so come back to the forum. We can’t wait to hear your
lame excuses, your if’s and but’s and when’s and how’s. We can’t wait for
you to run us through your 200 meters of frothing at 1.39 and the
several hours prior to the race which we are sure was filled with
jack knives and push ups, skipping, stepping – h*** – you may
have even got a quick marathon run in – you’ve been running
them all your life. But don’t run from the forum. Come on back
Ranger – we miss your talent!
