How cool is this?! Cathie gets a hat to match her team profile photo -- as a special recognition of being first boat into the virtual waters! AJ sent an updated caricature !

And from the Halls of Montezuma to the shores of Tripoli, Walter joins the Armoonda by passing the 100K mark....hooyah!

Happy New Year!

I wish all LUNA-TICS a healthy, happy and successful 2013!

Cleared by doctor for rowing after my ACL replacement surgery, so I will begin slowly rowing again :).
Glad to be back.

Happy rowing!

Andrea

P.S. Jan, please note that I will log some meters from way back in July, when I rowed on a C2 in the Bangalore hotel (as I just found my scribbled notes I have to decipher).
The chain was rather rusty and w/o battery when I started, but convinced the maintenance guy to give it some TLC and by the end it was "humming" nicely :).
So now I can say that I rowed on four continents (if rowing on the Australia-New Zealand cruise counts as rowing in Australia ;)).

Image Day 5 or 6 of 31....EVERY meter counts!

Team Standings
Pos. Team Team Type Total Event Meters Team Members Average Meters
1 Age Without Limits Virtual Club 6,213,150 272 22,842
2 Community Rowing, Inc On-Water Club 3,020,415 256 11,798
3 LUNA-TICS Virtual Club 2,926,528 87 33,638
4 Free Spirits Virtual Club 2,328,683 117 19,903
5 ANCIENTS Virtual Club 2,036,644 37 55,044

Making great progress! We have SIX canoes out in the virtual waters, and hooboy...when we get those oars! We'll be zooming even faster! New caricatures are great additions! As noted yesterday, there were some early indicators that we had some marathon fever in the crew....and this trend continues today. Michelle put in a FULL marathon, and Tim G and Katerina both put in HALF marathons. Half moons were noted from Jay, bg, Cathie, Richard T, Ronnie, Walter, and Dana. Marie and Sam were right in the mix of it all with just under a half moon. That's a lot of seat of the erg time! More about that seat of the erg stuff (ouch) at the end of today's posting.

Every single meter counts - whether you row a little or a lot. Sometimes we just don't have time to put in all the meters we want to do. Don't know about others, but there are a lot of times when I know I have to fight the psychological component of the meters...it's like there's a break point on longer rows that I just have to get past in order to finish them off in one session. For a half marathon distance, it's hanging in there until the 9999 point - then it all seems much easier. Row what you can, when you can.

Here's the current list of Challenge team participants. If you thought your name was on this list, and it's not showing up, you still need to register to participate. To do this, while in your online logbook, scroll over to the teams section and then scroll down to the link that lets you select the team and/or select to participate with this team. There are several year round team members who are rowing, rowing, rowing...but they aren't on this list. :( Hope to see everyone on the roster (but respect everyone's decisions). And I see that Sam has just hopped into a canoe, so I'll get right to that posting! Thank you ALL for rowing with us on either year round or Challenge team or both!

Seat of the Erg...and how to make that experience just a bit less painful (sometimes):

Throughout the year, we have some commentary about how to make rowing a bit more comfortable. There are several choices for seat pads:

- the block of memory foam (like that found in upholster's stores) cut to fit the erg seat is most popular

- the gel seat pad from JL Racing (a partner of Concept2)

- the sorbothane sore-no-more seat pad also from JL Racing - and a few other sources -

- bubble wrap

- the naturally occurring, built in seat pad :D

Another Canoe...it's Richard T !

Post by Kona2 » January 5th, 2013, 7:12 pm

Congratulations on putting another canoe into the Armoonda fleet, Richard T! This is a generic "native" in your canoe. I don't believe you had let your hair down at the time it was created!

It is that time of year when my real life rowing team makes me feel guilty. Two years ago they started a team for the Jan. Virtual Challenge. Every year they encourage me to sign up with the New Haven Rowing Club for this challenge. Every year I decline. I've been erging under the influence of the Luna-tics since 2008 or so. I find you all to be highly motivational and inspirational, so once again I declined joining my real-life crew team.

Here's to many meters in 2013!

Karyn
Three Cheers for Karyn - a true-blue Luna-Tic! Always glad to hear you are staying strong. :D

And three more cheers for Walter, Norton, Michelle, Jay, Sam and Richard for making a running start, and taking a flying leap off the end of the dock right into your canoes. Way to Row!

Sweet hat, Cathie!

You're welcome.

I wish I could make your personalized native persona but I can't do that without a photo of you.
